I never been busted (I came close several times).

After I got out the military, I went for a job interview and consented to a lie detector test. After I left, I'll bet that examiner thought I was a walking pharmaceutical company.

But that was way, way, way, back in the past.

Honesty may seem like it sucks now, but getting caught in a lie will suck even more.

This post is my opinion and I am entitled to that opinion.

If you think my post was harsh....... maybe you would like me to have a friend who is a member of the local MADD organization say a few words?

As far as I am concerned you do not deserve respect. Driving drunk once was a mistake, twice was questionable......... what you did?

Everyone makes mistakes....... but there is a major difference when your mistakes could easily kill another person....... let alone an entire family including children............. you were sober when you took that first drink every time, and you knew you would be driving home..... you made that choice........ and you chose to do this over and over and over and over and over and over again................ luckily for you, most people in this world care more about your life and the life of your family than you do/did about theirs.

I am entitled to my opinion and I know I am not the only one with it.

IMO...Recovering alcoholics (drunk drivers) do not belong driving big trucks anymore than rehabilitated child abusers belong working with children.
Pick another career.

Congrats on your 13 years of recovery! I have had many people close to me in recovery and it DOES WORK, if you work a program. Recovery is an honest program. Beware of untruths on your applications. They will fire you if they find out and it could destroy your self esteem and lead to other things that you don't need.
In your case, I would probably avoid the companies that ask "have you ever" and go with the ones that ask about the last 10 years. If you want to go to a "have you ever" company, I would put those applications in in person so you can explain right off the bat that you have been in recovery for an extended amount of time and dress your best and keep on smiling and show them that you are better off than most "regular" people!
Is the question "have you ever been arrested for a DUI or have you ever been convicted?" You said some were dropped to reckless. Those are not convictions for DUI.
Another thought is how will you get to meetings while you are on the road? You have to maintain your program. Beware of HALT (hungry, angry, lonely and tired). It seems there may be a lot of HALT on the road unless you are teaming....

I agree 100%. People do change. However, what you have said brings a little suspicion to your real intent. You sound like you want to hide your past and everyone will tell you that's the biggest mistake you can make. If you are truely proud of your recovery then you should stand behind that. Be honest and go from there. You've got this notion that no company in the world will hire you and that's just not true.

I do not agree with what you did, in fact I think you should have done some real jail time. But I also believe that if you are sober you are no more of a hazard than any other new driver.

No, I have no DUIs on my record, but I AM recovering - have been for 25 years.

What woke me up? Went to a party in Chicago Friday night. Woke up in the back seat of my car in Dallas on Wednesday. That shook me up.

It wasn't the first time I'd got someplace in my car, either. Was the longest distance traveled, though.

I was never (I assume) stopped by police. Never in an accident while drinking and driving... so I hurt nobody. Excluding myself.

Lest you think I'm becoming apologetic, please think again. I have NO tolerance for DUI. An alcoholic can say "Only one", but he KNOWS that's not going to happen. The ONLY choice is between Zero and too many.

Getting behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking ANY alcohol is insane. If I had my druthers, truckers would not be allowed alcohol within 24 hours of starting driving, not 4. A BAC of .01 would be too much.

The courts are far, far too lenient on this subject. And we take the wrong approach there, too. Too many DUIs? take the driver's license away!

No, I don't have the answer here - but what we do have is not working. I'm not entirely averse to the charge of "attempted pre-meditated manslaughter" for DUIs.

Have I lost friends or relatives to DUI? Yes, to both. The friends are why I quit driving ambulance - I was dispatched to the scene. Left a great job. Didn't stop drinking, though, until years later in Dallas.

Never having been an owner, as Ron is, I don't know. Probably not. Different set of criteria.

But, driver to driver, if somebody has been dry for more than 10 years, I'm willing to give him a chance. I certainly wouldn't equate him to a pedophile.

Wow Storyteller! You seem to really hate this guy. He says he has been clean so let him drive. Your acting ridiculous, people do change. Your saying you have never broken the law and not been caught, you have no questionable habits? Never driven tired or sick? Think about it, everybody has done things wrong. He recognizes his mistakes, I forgive him and wish him well.

 

I think "hate" is a pretty strong word to use here. I didn't get the impression any "hate" was involved in The Story Teller's post.
Perhaps it's just how we're reading it.

And whereas I may or may not totally agree with her opinion(s) -- she sure has every right to express them.

Whether or not she has broken any laws in her life is a moot point, IMO.
Wrong is wrong no matter who commits the act.
And two wrongs don't make a right.

As I've stated before, SOME folks find a fear of making the same mistake again, and do everything in their power to prevent doing it again. I'd trust them more than someone who's never experienced the clutches of alcohol and/or drugs. They don't know the warning signs like someone who's been there, done that.
And fear it.
Fear can be a healer.

 

Let me add that alcohol abuse (and that is what drinking and driving is) is a symptom of a much greater and deeper problem. I have known many people who were on the "12 pack to get through traffic" plan, everyday after work.
All it takes one time to get nailed (especially now) by law enforcement.
It's like a wise person once told me and I'll repeat it to those kids out there.
"Put your partying in one hand and the your livelihood, your family's well being, and your reputation in the other. Which one weighs more?"
