I'm not going to get in the middle of this one. All I'll say is I've done my share of stupid stuff in my younger day and I was lucky that I was never caught and lucky I didn't do myself or anyone else in. Yeah, I learned, and I'm not going to condemn anyone for having done the same thing.

    I agree with you 110%
And that's true with most addictions like smoking, gambling, ect....

It's funny that the addicts are the last to know that they have a problem.
they actually know they have problem but deny it.

Denial is not a river in Africa as they say. :yes2557:

    Storyteller - ok

I was a bit out of line with the 'sweets', wasn't I? My apologies. Subject pinched a bit of a nerve.

But, I do want to be clear - I am NOT excusing or defending anybody who drives impaired. Not even myself.

I was asking about myself, because I AM a recovering alcoholic. Just because I've never been caught doesn't change that. I included that particular story to show both the advancement of my problem, and my recognition of said problem. That drive to Dallas was not my first episode behind the wheel.. merely the most significant. Y'see, that's what I was meaning.

Sure - I've been dry longer than... ok, I WAS gonna say "Longer than you've been alive". But you've brazenly announced your age... so... I've been dry longer than you LOOK like you've been alive (am I smearing it on too thickly?)
But it doesn't change the fact that I'm recovering.

Yet.. I'm driving a truck (or, well, will be, come Monday)

I think that at SOME point, you should draw a line and say "anything on this side is bad. Anything on THAT side was bad, but may be usable now". For me, I think anybody who can remain dry for 10 years deserves a <ahem> shot.

Yes, I know that 'not caught" does not equal 'dry', but I'm assuming it does for the OP.

Lessee - oh. the moot point. No, I never had a quibble with your right to toss masonry and the like. I just mean that your right to do so is a secondary issue to the primary one of impaired driving, is all.

Am I saying that right? Hard to tell, been awake waaaay too long. Good thing I'm on a 34.

Let me see if I can whittle it down..

    1) Driving impaired is bad. in my book, one time is too many. My wife would agree with that. I have ZERO patience and tolerance for anybody who does it.

    2) it IS possible to .. control the problem. It may take help. It WILL take time. But it is controllable. I think that anybody who's shown he can control his addiction urges for 10 years or so is deserving of a chance to prove himself.

    3) Thank you for not ... not talking to me. Sometimes the echoes from our soapboxes make it hard to understand what's actually said.

Sorry I did not read all the posts, but one place you will likely get into trouble is if you are ever asked to go across the border to Canada.

I know any conviction follows you around forever (Including DUI) I dont know how strict the Canadian Border Guards are on Dui's but I know for Canadians going into the States its a huge ordeal.

So here is a scenario ...
You get a load bound for Vancouver, Bc Canada... Dispatch says can you get it there, you say ok... You get lucky getting into Canada... You try getting back into the States and when they ask have you ever been convicted...

Regardless of how you answer the question you may be in for a lengthly stay at the border.

I am a Canadian Driver so I truly dont know just how CBP views American Drivers with Convictions, but its just one instance where you may end up getting caught in a lie and being blacklisted from EVERY company out there!

As one driver had said its easier to work with a clear conscience then forever wait for the other shoe to drop.

I think it would be looked upon better by employers for you to explain that you had a problem in the past, learned from it, and its no longer an issue.

    Good Luck

Lurchgs and Working Class Patriot Thank this.

Wow Storyteller are we gonna be a smart-###? Quit acting all high and mighty. The man doesn't drink and drive anymore. I love the way you put quotation marks around logic, like everything you say is worthy enough to be put in a fortune cookie. Of course I believe that a persons prior acts should be considered, but not when there ancient history. Your right we are talking about drinking and driving but you crossed the line and started attacking him and then me. That's what I was responding to. I just want don't believe your as perfect of a driver as you claim to be. No I'm not wrong everybody has done something wrong. I would be outraged if a truck driver killed my family no matter what he had on his records. Maybe you should go buy a hatchet, you would fit in in an old black and white photo with some busted barrels of alcohol.

The first time I went to Canada, there were four drifters ahead of us "looking for work". They told them Canada wouldn't be needing their services.
A driver was the next in line. The guard came out after checking on him and said "you told me you only had one DUI, it says you had two and 'something else'??. You lied to me. You're not going in!"

I told her about a few things in the distant past. She checked. No problem. I went through.

Coming back, I just had to open my mouth and the guy was thinking "this hayseed's definitely an American." He looked at my license and waved me through.

As much as I'd love to see Quebec, I'm not so sure I want to do it in a truck.

Why do you assume she doesn't already have a hatchet?
Oh, sure ---- it might be buried, but easy to dig up. I hear it's right under the
    Do Not Disturb sign.

The StoryTeller told her story, complete with her opinions, including examples. She's entitled to do that.
Whether we agree or disagree, is not the point. Rather, it's whether we can accept that others will have, from time to time, differing opinions.
And respect that they will and do.
