A half twist does not change the working load limit of a strap. It does however, keep them from flapping and working their way loose.

I sent an email to Kinedyne abd asked themm if they do tests with a twist in the strap and if it effects the integrity of the strap by doing so. When I get a reply I will post it.

Cool, I just spent the last 40 minutes looking for info and couldnt find anything. There is nothing in the North American Securement Standard Pdf that I looked at.

the twist is to keep them from vibrating goin down the road it breaks up the air flow over the strap and doesnt allow them to get into their harmonic frequency range that makes that buzzing noise goin down the freeway that you here from some of them when they are straight the tighter and shorter they are the higher the pitch ahhaha -
That flapping will do more to weaken the strap and damage the load than putting a twist in it ever will. There are a lot of loads that if you don't put a half twist in it, you cannot get it tight enough to prevent the strap bouncing in the wind. If you get caught with straps moving at all in Texas, it's a ticket.

Your physics are correct twisting the straps reduces their load capacity.

Well, all of them, really. There are minimum standards which are laid out in the rules. You have to at least meet those.
If you have a 10k pound coil and have 4800lb chains, you should have at least 3 on each coil if loaded suicide. Suicide is loaded so that if that coil breaks loose, it could roll up the trailer and into the cab, killing you. Charming, isn't it. Shotgun is loaded so that it would roll off the side of the trailer if it breaks loose. You can use two chains and a strap over the top for those at 10k.
The heavier the coil, the more chains you need on it. Basically, if the thing makes you nervous, put another chain on it.orion3814 Thanks this.
