Most of them straps have a 15,000-20,000 lb breaking strength. The web design of the stitch distributes the weight. I would think the twist would put a little extra on the center of the strap instead of the edges. With multiple straps on one small section, it would take something extremely heavy to break them. That case they use chains.

    Thats only on suicide coils.

    You got that theory backwards.

That makes no sense. If half a twist doesn't effect the rating then whats a whole twist gonna hurt? Personally I think any twist in the strap is bad, I take that back, straps are worthless on any type of steel! I've seen to many lazy truck drivers use straps on steel bars, beams, and to many other steel products where they should've been using chains.

Sorry but anything you can cut thru with a knife, shouldn't be used solely to hold a load of steel to a trailer!

A half twist won't reduce capacity.

Multiple twists would reduce capacity, but I don't see how a half twist would.

You are correct. A flat strap most of the time cannot be made tight enough to prevent ALL singing in the wind. And that vibration of the strap edge even if its not against any thing will start the edge to unraveling.

THIS does reduce capacity of the strap!

To me a driver with his straps humming, singing and fluttering in the wind is a sign of an improperly trained unprofessional driver.
He is damaging his equipment faster than is necessary and will require buying new sooner than if he would put a simple half twist in it before tightening.

Les you've mentioned that your straps are never seen.

This is a different type of application than an open flat that catches all the wind.

You're right about the steel, or anything with a sharp edge. But think of the strap the same as a chain. A half twist won't bother it, but several twists will have it all bound up and that will weaken it. And I see chains like that going down the road too. Gotta wonder what the driver is thinking.

I understand the twist to take out the singing but with all the stupid DOT laws you'd figure they would knock the rating down cause of the twist?

I agree with the twisted up chains. To me thats just laziness or lack of knowledge.

Got my info from a professional rigger he says they are designed to be pulled straight and anything you do that results in the force not being applied equally will reduce the tinsel strength whether it be a chain or strap.
