Thanks a lot everyone. I really appreciate ALL the posts. Good news or bad. I always thought as long as you had a GOOD employment track record (NO gaps, Never been fired) and a clean DMV printout, you were wanted. Would you please tell me more about DHE? Thanks again guys.

Let me break it down nice and slow for YOU!
    You are wrong!
If he wants to work for a bottom feeder company, He'll have a hard time finding work.
If on the other hand, He wants to find a better job at a better company, He'll look at an O/O or smaller mom and pop outfit that needs a driver and the fact that he's been local for those years will make...No difference!

    He's an "experienced driver"....

The BEST thing that will happen to him is NOT being able to go to work for some big P.O.S. company that has that mentality!

Unlees he thinks "outside the box" and looks at different route into driving over the road....There are plenty of opportunities out there that are far superior to working at the bottom feeder, student oriented companies!

NO! It means he has no OTR experience....And that's a hell of a big difference.

Where do you nay saying whiners get off passing out this kind of drivel?
The man asked a question and the usual suspects come out of the gate telling him that "All things are impossible so, Why even try?"

Make an attempt to think outside the narrow vision of this industry that YOU have and let the man know about the real options that are available to an experienced drive that has not driven OTR!
    They are out there!

The guy I pull for has a few company trucks of his own and will not even consider hiring what YOU consider to be an experienced OTR driver!

If some dork with a couple of years OTR for one of these big companies comes in and puts in an application, He just tosses it in the trash as soon as he sees that fact.

But he has hired a couple of guys like this guy and taught them a couple of things and had them run their first trip or two with a more experienced hand and they have turened out to be good hands!

If they had come here and listened to the "whiner crew" they would still be unemployed...

There are tons of small companies that will hire a guy like this and not worry for a second whether he's got "OTR experience" They just want him to be able to do the job!

Well it's simple, As for as companies are concerned local in no exp. doesn't matter if you have done it for 50 yrs. Local means nothing. So yes, as far as the companies are concerned a fresh out of school rookie is preferable to a 12 yr local driver. If you don't have 6 mos or more OTR in the last 36 they won't even talk to you. Many of them want 6 in the last 12 now days.

Local means nothing? How many docks a day do you hit?
How much of your time is open road driving vs city traffic, tight corners, and a defined space of time to get 7-20 deliveries while the businesses are open.

They want the minimum wage earner, not the experience level to do a safe and responsible work ethic. How many of these steering wheel holders even care about "on time performance"? Most just want to get a paycheck...no matter how small. They aren't in it for the "long haul", it is just a "check to get by" issue...80% will jump off the truck within 6 months.

You're just plain wrong. I'm with Blackw900, My company (a major oil company) will not even consider a driver that only has OTR experience. It takes alot more skill to get an 85 foot truck through an alley way and turn into a station with 2 to 3 inches cleance on each side. IT takes alot more skill to deal with traffic all day long. We had two runs up into Utah and if it wasn't for the radio I'd go to sleep (very boring). I ran OTR for many years and I'll trade it all in to stay local and haul gasoline.

I could not have said it any better !!!!
These new breed drivers think they know it all . I would love to see an newbie go into San Francisco with an moving truck and make a delivery from house to house and see where their skills are .
How about that delivery driver that has a day cab and an 48' trailer trying to get in behind the local hole in the wall grocery store.....
Go to Napa wine country and get an shipment from an billionaires estates on an one way driveway barely big enough for their limo. and knowing if you track your rear tandems off into the grass you tear up their sprinkler system and are in no doubt out of an job.....
Do not get me wrong ... I am OTR but come on man ..... Most local,LTL drivers have an more difficult day than most OTR drivers ever will....

Been there and done that too.....
There is more skill involved than driving between the lines on the pavement.
Alot of companies and yes even OTR companies were loving the fact that i had local experience so if in a pinch they would not have to worry about me going into any major City .
But hey Gashauler you , Blackw900 and most of us on here are over qualified for the bottom feeder companies that want the guy straight out of school or with 6 months experience .
