Hey PawPaw yes I am married and I am 38 years old.I have alked to my wife about it and she support me 100%. I am good with numbers. I used to talk to my brother all the time about trucking because I was interested. The job I had before my company moved over seas required me to travel atleast 20 days a month so my wife is used to me being away from home. He was leased to a company and they required you to have 12 months experience. I think that I am a pretty smart young man with a master degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Alabama. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that will qualify me to be a sucessful owner.
I need some advice!!!!

Greatwide will probably hire you with your truck after you get the CDL.
Also join OOIDA; good organization for 0/0's. Google for the website & phone number. -
Well, I'm going to go out on a limb here and go against the grain. I say put a for sale sign on the truck pronto ! It's an '07 Int'l just like every other '07 Int'l out there. It's not doing you any good, you're likely a few years away from being able to do anything with it. Sell it, don't give it away, ask your price. But you can always buy another one like it later. It's just going to lose value sitting.
I understand the concept of sentimental value, but I don't agree with it, take a picture, that truck wasn't your brothers only possession I'm sure. Keep his ball bat or cd's or something for sentimentality. That truck is just gonna lose value sitting, and by the time you figure out something to do with it, it may not be the truck for you anyways. sell it. -
Very sorry to hear about your brother.
If your going to park the rig for a while, don't forget that you still need to maintain it. I'd set the idle at about 900-1000 RPM for about 30-60 minutes once week or every other week. Keep the battery's maintained and keep the tire pressures maintained. Maybe even move the rig a few feet either direction every other week to avoid possible flat spots. That's just my own opinion, though.
Others may have other suggestions? -
Another is clicking on our handle , and sending a private message . That gets top priority , whenever we log on. I never share PMs , without permission , and then only if its revelant.
Another thing . You're new , and your posts are new. That draws attention. After awhile , the superficial posters to your thread will go away. You'll wonder if anyone even sees you anymore.
There is a lot of merit , in the posts I've read , since I posted . One ,in particular , sticks out. I don't want to say this, cause it could discourage you , but I must.
This is a business . It's not a game. If you are keeping your brothers truck , and trying to follow in his footsteps , for purely sentimental reasons , you are making the wrong choice.
It is not for everyone , this life.
A Masters in anything , shows you a certain degree of fortitude , though I'm not certain what Educational Leadership is. You could be , well , not over-qualified , though that's entirely possible , but bent in a different way.
Nonetheless ,if you have a hankering for the road , and love being Completely on your own , you could do well . That's not a given , but it sure helps.
I pull a tank . It pays fairly well , and has some advantages . So does flatbeding . Heavy Haul pays the best , it's flatbeding , and you only run daylight hours . But it has its own problems , and you're not gonna get there very easily.
You better be young , cause they ( dispatchers , companies , shippers ,receivers ) are gonna expect you to accommodate their schedules , not yours . That means running all night , and sleeping during the day ,sometimes . I could do that , when I was your age , and did. Now I'm a cranky old bast**d , and , while I'll try to accomidate them , the load will get there , when I do. You Do Not have that option.
OK. I've said enough. I'll be around , till about 3 tomorrow. Then I've got a load to haul , and I'll be busy till at least Sunday. I'll look in when I can , but don't expect thoughtfull answers , until I have time. There are others here that that can help.
You'll find out , on your own , who they are.
As far as your brothers truck is concerned ,( and remember , it's Your truck now ) , there is some good advise already posted. Mine is , keep the batteries charged . Don't overcharge them. The truck should be driven , at least once a month , for a ways . At least long enough to bring it to operating temp. If you're bob tailing ( no trailer , no load ) , it could be awhile , depending on the tempeture . Keep the tanks full , or close to full. Use an additive , like power service. Diesel is kinda like gas , it gets stale , just not as quick. Or , drain the tanks completely , put an additive in em , more when you fire it up , after adding fresh diesel. That probably makes more sense , but you'll have to be the judge of that. Empty tanks draw moisture , and full tanks , well , they'll 1. Go stale , and 2. Allow algae to grow. If you can find Biodesel , put it in . The higher the number , the better . It stops algae from growing in your tanks .ballcoach and Jseney12078 Thank this. -
Well, I need to amend the post . Algae will grow , whether the tanks are empty or full . If it sits , you're gonna need to change fuel filters after a bit , cause even though biodiesel will kill the algae , the carcasses will remain , and they'll plug up the fuel filters . Not a huge problem , until after you put it back on the road , but a problem , nonetheless . Carry extra fuel filters.
Also , the crankcase will draw moisture , even sitting. How much , depends on the humidity where it's at, and how long it sits . Water is death to bearings , specially on a diesel , cause of the close tolerances. In normal operation , its not really a problem , cause the oil , and engine , heat up enough to vaporize the water. And mostly cause they don't sit that long.
If you can put the truck indoors , like a garage , it helps .
An 07 ISX is a good engine , but like anything with tits , or wheels , it'll give you problems . You need to educate yourself on it , as well as get you're CDL. Is it an EGR only engine , and , if not , learn about DPF engines .
For that matter , find out whatcha got , so you can ask questions , and check out these forums. Lotta info here , but you gotta know what you're looking for.
I'm done , goodnight.Jseney12078 Thanks this. -
Very well said Pawpaw, plus when he bobtails around warming the engine up, it will keep all the seals from drying out.
