Well, recall that the Apple Newton was for a long time THE handheld, and then came along Palm. I had a Palm Zire and it was pretty cool for the time. It's pitiful what Palm has become, having faced Chapter 11 and so on. I personally hope the Pre survives because this marketplace does have the room, but at this point the Pre depends upon iTunes. We will see how that works out.

Research in Motion was just a dream in the Newton-Palm days. I will say that the proprietary Blackberry mail system was hot for a long time, but its a mistake to view the Canadian company has somehow more sophisticated than the Cupertino produced iPhone. To begin with the software driven high resolution touch screen of the iPhone is anything but "entry level". Artful, fun, and easy to use is not easy to produce, but Apple's share value shows it is the undisputed master of this.

I spent a lot of time handling phones, comparing ease of use and appearance while internet browsing, and other features on all these phones. The choice was pretty obvious--iPhone. It's not perfect, but it's a very powerful handheld.

I confess though that I'm biased because my iPod crapped out after 5 years, and I felt compelled to combine a new one of those with a new phone. Besides Apple's sharevalue makes me smile. I put 2 grand down in 1984, and now it's worth 40 grand. Watch the TV ads and BELIEVE ;-)

I believe "proprietary" is why Apple is not on more office desks today. I dislike all the proprietary crap. But, Apple created a true hit with the iPhone. iTunes couldn't suck more but I am learning to tolerate it.

Apple better consider history or we may see many other tech companies stomp them again. Next time there may not be a new platform to save them.

You own a blackberry and do not use it for buiness email and such, it is just as much a toy as the iphone. I use my iphone for business and I know people who own blackberries for personal use (i.e. status symbol/ toy)

BTW you want a device that does everything but the iphone is too big? What exactely are you looking for? I doubt it exists yet.

I use the iphone for everything except Quicken/ Quick Books. If I had an app for that I wouldn't need my laptop anymore. Quicken online sucks. I can do more on my bank's website.

Are you psychic or something? I most certainly do use my BlackBerry for business purposes. I listed everything else that it I use it for as most people see the BlackBerry as a purely business oriented device.

My BlackBerry *does* do everything. It's smaller than the iPhone and I'm happy with it.

Ditto on the Quicken Online statement. I switched to using another company that is free and does a #### good job of showing me where my money is going... without manual entry.
