I agrre with everyones comment on teams. Look around and explore your options. Even look into what options are at home once you get your liscense. Remember just because they advertise 50 60 or 70k cut it in half. And look for forums on those companies and review them dont let another driver make your decision but let all voices be open to hear.

Ok. Now you guys are scaring the s*** out of me, lol.

I am only planning on doing the one year OTR so I can get the experience. It seems that most LTL companies will only hire you if you have one year, and it seems like that is the most money with the most home time.

Truthfully guys, I am trying to make better money for my daughter. At $16,000 GROSS a year we are not having an easy go of it. The way you guys are talking it seems like I wouldn't be making much more then that after all of the cost of living on the road. That really bum's me out. I am just so tired of working for pennies, and having to deal with these people that look down on you, and treat you like #### because you work where you work. I am just a dad trying to make some money for his kid.

I would rather be solo for the same reasons that you guys have pointed out, but the only company that I could find in my area only trains for teams. I am in Tampa Bay,FL , and the training is in Jacksonville,FL.

Do any of you know of any companies in my area? Preferably LTL companies that will get you your CDL. Everything that I have found you need your CDL already, and one year experience. Any help that you guys can provide will be much appreciated!

I am a new driver, I make 4-10k a month. The company I drive for is a small mom and pop Oper. I know I am very lucky, but there are some good jobs out there.

Are you in FL? If so, are you willing to say what your company is?

Ok, don't bum out. At least you had the initiative to research this a little. Years ago, we didn't have the luxury of sites like this, so we went in blind, and found out the hard way it sucked. And nobody, at least not here, will look down on you for what you do now. It's the American way to try and do something better, and you are on the right track. All we are saying, is this may look real attractive now, but the "regulars" here have seen time and time again, people in your situation, who may be out of options, go into these careers and find out in a hurry, it's not all sunshine and smiles, like the recruiter told you. That's why I suggest working on the dock at an LTL company, and work your way in that way. Remember, it's not necessarily what you make, it's what you spend, and being at that soccer game or school play for the kid, is something you need to do, for her. I know 1st hand, daughters need their father around, and I'm glad I was there for my kids activities.
Maybe I'm making too much about being there for your kids, but remember too, if they don't get advice from you, they are going to look elsewhere to get answers, and that could be a problem.

I am in Canada, the company I work for has almost no turn over. But I wanted you to know there are good companies out there that are willing to train and pay well.

I totally agree. My daughter, and I are really close. Like I said, we live together. We talk everyday. Being away from her will hands down be my greatest issue with going OTR.

I just don't know what to do #### it, lol. I like the dock idea. Being home every night would be fantastic. I will try to find some places near me.

Also, yes, it is on how you spend your money. With us, $16,000 gross a year is just ridiculous.

The company that I would be signing on with promises $40,000 your first year. If that was truly the case, then that would be fantastic. But!, like you guys said. These guys will promise you the world and then some lol.

I keep hearing that Prime is a good option, but then right after that somebody else will say that they are the worst company to ever do business, lol.

Thank you for taking the time too talk to me. Thank god for sites like these. I dont know how you guys did it back in the day, lol.

Is there a reason you do not want a local job?

That's the problem with this business. For some it works, and for some it's a nightmare. In trucking, there is no "one size, fits all". Like I say, I was mostly a local driver, and if something happened, I wasn't more than a couple hours away, at most. I've heard here, horror stories, of family members getting sick, or worse, and getting no compassion from the company, and stuck in some God-forsaken place and can't attend, and if you abandon the truck, you'll be "blackballed" from the industry for a while. Keep asking questions, it could save you a big hassle later.

I would love to stay local! I just can not for the life of me find a company that will put me through training that is local. Everything that I keep finding that will train me, you have to be OTR.
