The ribbon cable connects the TCU to the sensors on the shift forks.
The conductors break in the cable near the end and can make an
intermittent connection. Some times not long enough to log a code.
If the truck refused to move I would expect to see a logged code.
I have replaced several of the ribbon cables in the past few years.

Hey Inderjit, how hard is this job? Is the part expensive?
-
The transmission has to come out and the TCU which is bolted to the top has to be
removed then the shift bar housing lifted off and you replace the harness with the ribbon cable.
From memory its just over an hours work to replace it once the transmission is out.
I'm not sure the price of the parts though.
If you replace the clutch while the transmission is out you will need someone to calibrate the
new clutch with the Volvo software.KB3MMX and BoxCarKidd Thank this. -
I stopped by Volvo dealer today. They scanned it and said it didn’t show any issues. Now they want to drop the trans and visually inspect it to see if they can find the problem. 10 hours labor for uninstalling and reinstalling. $500 for new trans fluid. Plus labor time to “find the problem”.
$ 2k for possible finding a problem? I pulled the truck out of their shop.KB3MMX Thanks this. -
You are correct. That’s what it was. Thanks for your help.KB3MMX Thanks this.

Check small trans air tank for water, replace the airdryer if you haven't in last 12months.
The tank is back behind the cab on drivers side.
Make sure you're 100+ psi before putting into gear also.BoxCarKidd Thanks this.
