Hi, I don't have all information of your problem but base on your conversation i'm suspecting you have a (Ribbon Tape) problem, it's the internal communication between the transmission ECU and the transmission control housing.
I saw this problem more than one time, when the problem occur the engine cut because the transmission ECU request from engine to cut the engine torque to be able to make a shift but nothing happen because it's a false information come from TECU.
Look for the high count code in the TECU, on gear or Range often FMI 7 also FMI 2 but never active code, if so you probably have a ribbon tape problem.
That part can be replace (it comes in a kit with internal transmission harness)

Ben I think I have the same issue, Do you feel I may have the same problem- TECU RIBBON! So what happens is, sometimes truck is running fine but sometimes after driving for an hour or so and while driving on the highway or when we make a stop at the signal, it starts to show the sign on the dashboard as “check transmission at next stop” and the truck doesn’t move, like it gets stuck. But later on, would suddenly start behaving normal again.
