There's one spot were auto boxes seem to fail. When a driver gets stuck at one point. He (or she) cannot rock the truck fast enough with out the computer going into protect mode.

    Please explain the underlined part...

I thought one of i-shift's key selling point is "fuel economy"

Well it is. But manufacturers like to sell pie in the sky numbers. If my fuel economy isn't up to what Volvo said it should be, it's not on me.

My last quarter IFTA report I just filed, I averaged 7.61 mpg with my Volvo 455 hp & I-Shift. I don't know how that fares with others too be honest, however, I'm pleased with that kind of fuel economy.

That's running the I-5 corridor from WA to CA loaded at an average of 44k in the box down and 20k in the box back up. I run at 58 to 60 mph.

I traverse some pretty good hills down and up, including, Roberts mtn, Canyon Creek Pass, Stage Pass, Smith Summit, Sexton Pass, the Siskiyou Pass, several other good climbs through the Shasta range and of course the Grapevine going into L.A.

When loaded at 78k, I climb the steepest (6%) grades at 28 mph in 9th gear at around 1400 rpm. Keeping me in the sweet spot. My computer reading shows I'm in the sweet spot 94% of time. Some of the times I'm not, is because I don't like to ride the brakes down those steep hills heavy and I override the system into manual and run down at 1700 rpm.

Speaking of the functionality of the I-Shift, I like it a lot, so much so, that I specifically purchased my Volvo 670 because of it. I had driven them with the company I drove for last and loved it.

I have never had any issues some allude to here, in any kind of weather or conditions. The computer can out shift a manual shifter any day of the week. When it comes to utilizing the torque ratios these trucks are engineered with, the key is to allow the computer to shift the transmission, especially on climbs, higher rpm's do not equate to better performance, which is why a lot of fleets are now disabling the manual override option on these trucks.

These are my opinions based on experience over a long period of time using the I-Shift.

But like they say, opinions are like butt-holes, everyone has one... ;-)
