$9000 for school? Blow me a kiss! -
ha ha. we called stevens last year to apply for a job and they told us we had too much exp.......guess they did us a favor.....

Got my own liscense from the local community college here, Stevens was one of the few who seemed interested in hiring me. I think it has more to do with location but they dont seem to have a problem with training me without the 9k or my refusal to leash. Find out Monday i guess. Good luck to you.

First of all, the $9,000 is in line with what other companies that offer CDL school charge.
Is it high? You bet!
The instruction and equipment is good. However, I still advise people to go to a private school or Community College if possible.
Now the 9 grand is not the real cost if you stay with Stevens for one year. And that's the way the program is really designed to work.
Your total out of pocket expense is closer to $3,600 I don't have the exact amount, but if you stay 12 months, you owe about $2,600. If you continue to stay, they deduct about $25 per week until that balance is paid.
The incentive is to keep you there for at least a year, a commitment that works for both parties.
I get tired of people bagging on training companies and have no idea of what they're speaking. They hear rumors, or read some negative posts, and suddenly they are 'experts', ready to tear down a company.
That goes for many other training companies as well.
Yea, I know some of you were born with a steering wheel in hand and could double clutch right out of the womb, but for the rest of us, we had to be taught.
It costs a lot of money to train people, no matter whether it's to be a driver, plumber or printer.
It has been standard practice to pay beginners significantly less money to cover a part of that cost.
Electricians earn $25-$45 per hour, depending where they live. But a brand new apprentice will start out around 40% of that rate.
And attend two to three years of school during their apprenticeship.
But do we bag on electrical contractors because they are so cheap?
Stevens provides first rate training, excellent equipment and plenty of freight.
They turn out excellent drivers, for those that stay at least a year, and provide the opportunity for those drivers to move onto other companies if that's what they choose.flightwatch Thanks this. -
Hummm... If you go to an accredited school and pay yourself many companies reimburse the expense if you go to work for them within a year of graduation and if you stay for a year; you get reimbursed either all at once, monthly installments or some now and some later; each are different. Schneider was like that as was Swift; not sure if they are still doing that but it cannot hurt to check.
$9000? I attended a community college and received a certificate in Commercial Transportation as well as finished the last semester, 19 credit hours, of an Associates Degree for $5800. The school covered the cost of my physical, my Class-A and school bus testing, background checks for hazmat, and for my license card as part of tuition.Last edited: Dec 18, 2011

Isn't Stevens a company that tries to starve you into a "flease?"
I never wanted to pull refer. Just doing dry van to grocery warehouses was bad enough.
