I'm really having a hard time choosing between Crete and Averitt. I need to make a decision soon because I would like to start with one or the other next week. I've got both waiting for a response. So many positives and negatives about both companies I can't decide. Can any of you help me? One of the worst things that scares me about Averitt is the low miles and sitting waiting on loads all the time. Can any of you sell me on one of these companies? Thanks

My experience with Averitt has been FAR from sitting around waiting on loads and low miles. They have delivered what they promised me. I average 2200 miles a week...spot on to what they recruiter told me. I sometimes sit because I delivered in the morning and I have to take a break for an evening pick up, but I don't sit around waiting on loads all the time. None of the drivers I personally know and talk with experience this either.

From what I hear Crete is a good company, but the thing that is most important to me is getting home on the weekends. I am very much a family man and that time with my wife and grandson are more important than a few more miles in the truck on weekends.

An older trucker one told me this: "All trucking companies are basically the same. Some try to get into your wallet more than others do. It all comes down to who makes you happy and the benefits." I have found this to be true.

I hope you are happy with whatever choice you make.

Yes. You choose they style of shirts you wear. I am a polo shirt with a front pocket kinda guy myself. That is what I chose. They also have pants, shorts, shoes both steel toed and regular, socks, caps, jackets etc you can accumulate over time. I also keep a couple civilian shirts in the truck for my off time out of the truck.

BigM. Thank you so much for the info. You and Mustang have helped everyone including myself in the move towards Averitt. Do you have to wear Averitt's issued pants all the time? My old company issued gray pants like Averitt's but they would let me wear Dickie black cargo slacks. I like them because they're comfortable and don't shrink as bad as the issued pants. Also how long do you usually get to stay home on the weekend? Last time I was with a weekend at home company I rolled in Sat. morning and was gone 34hrs later.

Thought of another question. I was working at SEFL. We were off and were paid for a full 8 hrs work on holidays. How does Averitt handle holidays? Pay and time off?

I see drivers wearing things other than uniform pants and when I am just driving and not at a customer I wear my cumfy shorts as I call them. I just change into my uniform pants before I get to a customer. I find them very comfortable, but on long drives the shorts are way better. I have seen Averitt drivers in jeans, etc. If someone in leadership sees you wearing them they may have something to say. I like the fact that we have a dress standard. I see so many drivers in stained t-shirts, sweats and crocks that I think it makes us stand out from the crowd.

As for holidays, you get paid for 8 holidays (I think) after you have been onboard for 6 months. I got 250 miles for July 4th. After a couple years it increases to 500 miles pay on holidays. Ask your recruiter for the specifics.

Question #1. How long do you usually get to stay home on the weekend? Last time I was with a weekend at home company I rolled in Sat. morning and was gone 34hrs later. Sometimes 24 hrs.

Question #2. I see postings on this forum from Averitt T/L drivers stating they make 55-60,000 a year. I just can't figure out where they come up with those numbers unless they are on a dedicated account. Even if they are at top pay which I think is .42 it would still only put them at 44-48,000 tops. This is at an average of 2200 a week. Correct me if I'm wrong on the cpm, but I just don't see how they are making that kind of money? If they are then maybe I need to make Averitt my new career. Weekends home and potential of 55-60000 in the next 5 years. I can live with that very comfortably. Not many high paying trucking jobs in my area without working you blank off all week.

That's crazy. All you have to do is get a copy of your short form transcript from the IRS to prove the dates you were there. I think that's what the form was called. I applied for Epes Transport a couple years ago. During the application process I had to get a copy of this from the IRS to prove employment with my father's company because Epes would not take my father's word since he was immediate family. Epes gave me the number to call. It took about an hour on hold with the IRS but they finally faxed it to me with no problem. Epes offered me the job but I never took it.
