I thought Swift & Prime wanted drivers. Doesn't seem that way.

I started to think that maybe I didn't hit the "submit application" button. That's part of the reason I called. But when I did, the recruiter knew my name before I gave it to him. He obviously had my info pulled up from the phone number I was calling from. So, indeed, they got my application. I went back to check my spam folder. No confirmation there, either.

Thinking about it now, it does seem a much, much better way to approach my first OTR driving job. I'm sure the recruiters get a lot of Lookie Lous, calling for info and then disappearing into the night. Especially when those calls come from folks that are looking for something (training) for nothing. It's likely a totally different story when someone calls to say they are about to finish driving school that they paid for on their own.

Well I am not sure whether I should start locally or go OTR. I graduated from a great truck school in Oregon. IITR.

Well, after you get your CDL through a CC--sounds like a good plan--you'll probably have lots of companies to choose from right out of the gate. In fact, you'll probably have job offers before the class is over. I hope you enjoy driving--local or OTR--as much as I did.

I don't see how that's true because I didn't hear anything besides from May, Schneider and Werner.

Quit concentrating on companies with 10,000+ drivers. I bet there are 100 companies within a 30 minute drive that you nor I have ever heard of that hire drivers. Many don't accept apps from a website. You need to hit the street and see them in person. Taking the path of least resistance with also yield the least pleasing results.

I just feel under pressure to go with a company right away due to bills coming up in a few months.

Do yourself a favor. Take one more week before deciding and go out and actually visit some companies in your area. I bet you could hit 20-30 in a week. You might be surprised by the results.

Well I don't want to ruin my chances with Schneider though. Already cancelled once.

I think that's a great point. Like Lightside said above, I too am concerned about small local outfits that seem to be a bigger risk. Will I get miles? Do they have their affairs in order? When we read about the big carriers here, let's say Swift, there's a mountain of opinions to sort through. In the end, you have an idea of what you're getting into, for better and for worse. You can't get that feeling as easily with a small outfit, especially as a new driver. I, for instance, want as little home time as possible for the first 12-18 months. Will a local carrier give me that and how do I verify the info they give me? If they only have a few drivers, it isn't as easy to find one with an opinion on the company.

I understand I can make a bunch of phone calls and make the best decision I can in the end. I'm just saying that it's a concern of mine as I enter the field.
