Where do I start?
I currently have a side mic 148 thats been tuned, running through a single 5' fiberglass Wilson.
Do I build on this or start with something else?
Thanks.

Do you want to sound different or just talk farther? Have you got room for a taller antenna, for a start?
And do you know if the limiter is still intact on that 148?

How deep are your pockets?
Logan76 Thanks this. -
Why? Any particular reason?

Yep they make radios for just about every pocket ....

I'm just trying to determine how the OP defines a "big radio" by what he wants it to do.

I want to sound loud.
I want to talk far.
I want to talk skip
Antenna height might be a problem, mounted on a truck. I've considered setting up a 102" whip while parked. Would that work?
Not sure about the limiter, am told it "swings" 15 on AM and makes 22 on SSB.
Pockets? Maybe $3-500? -
That's just a touch too much.

$3 -#500 wont buy a big set up,

Wait! I just noticed?, It says you've been trucking for 20 years?, And you have no idea where to start to get a big radio?
