Yep, that's it. WDOT spokesman said that the girder height is lower on the sides and that the driver got too close to the edge and struck one of the side girders that angle down.
It's horrible no matter how it happened. Thank God no one was killed. However, the I-5 up there is going to be a mess for weeks.

Have you ever been stopped on a large span bridge (like over the Columbia) and felt the bridge going up and down and thought, I sure hope this bridge doesn't collapse right now, pretty spooky

"The bridge, built in 1955, was considered structurally deficient in 1992, and functionally obsolete in 2000 and 2010, according to the National Bridge Inventory."
