Yep, that's it. WDOT spokesman said that the girder height is lower on the sides and that the driver got too close to the edge and struck one of the side girders that angle down.

It's horrible no matter how it happened. Thank God no one was killed. However, the I-5 up there is going to be a mess for weeks.

I'd think that if it hit, it'd have popped the securement on the can, and at least have done some damage to it, but the container looks like it's just fine. Who knows... one thing's for sure: the bridge girders and main trusses are looking pretty rusty under that top coat of paint. I wonder if the contractor "serviced" it the same way used car lots in Mexico rebuild engines. With some paint, and a promise.

I agree Scoot, it's good that no one died tonight. That had to have been one helluva ride.

EDIT: Oops, I was wrong, it IS on I-5. What a mess. Thanks for the corrections without flaming me to cinders, haha. :)

Have you ever been stopped on a large span bridge (like over the Columbia) and felt the bridge going up and down and thought, I sure hope this bridge doesn't collapse right now, pretty spooky ;-)

    Yes, very spooky!!

    According to the news article:

"The bridge, built in 1955, was considered structurally deficient in 1992, and functionally obsolete in 2000 and 2010, according to the National Bridge Inventory."

    Emphasis added.

the lead pilot car with the over height pole and whip and the truck were too close so not enough time to warn the truck about the whip on the pilot car hitting the bridge.

Ooops, you're right, I'm wrong. My source article was in err. It's not the WA536 bridge after all. Sorry for the confusion on my part.

    jomar68 Thanks this.

It looks like I-5 traffic can temporarily be diverted to the Riverside bridge, perhaps?
