Identify this style of drums and axle hubs

I'am you mentioned that .. because I was think'n that was something I had seen .. once

 

There is a guy in Amarillo that had a 4070B with a KTA. It was tight and the cab was 3 or 4 inches higher if I recall. Just enough to notice if you were parked next to another one. So I would think a 3406 could be shoehorned. I wonder if it was a competition thing due to the Ag line of things? But Cat at the time didn’t have a real ag presence like they do now. Whereas Cummins was used in tractors and construction equipment by just about every color manufacture out there. You are right on the twin sticks. Seems road rangers were the norm. Heck a good friend down in the Tejas valley has a few original Cummins powered Emeryvilles. I don’t think they were offered with sticks either?

 

Lol! You said twin stacks not sticks. The one with the Kta does not have twin exhaust stacks either. It kinda looked like the layout of the cab floor and everything under it would not allow it.

 

No. Air shifted married boxes. Single stick with a dial style knob. Pos. They had 16 and 20 speeds as well. Their answer to RoadRangers. They tried for awhile but they were a pain and lots of problems.
Uncle had ordered the 16 speed new in a ‘70 351 behind an NTC335. He swapped it out to a RTO12513 within a year or two.

 

Wasn’t there an air operated 14 speed spicer?

 

I have never seen one with a two stick. I have seen a few with a 5 speed trans and a two speed rear. Those were A’s though.

 

Iam strictly speculating.. but those 4070b were designed with fleets in mind I remember seeing alot of those trucks with those ugly fleet front bumpers lol .. I also think IH didn't really have any desire to cater to the O/O .. also when those trucks were being built the 1693 was the hot ticket Cat was rolling out .. that motor is physically 7.3" longer than a 3406 plus they were brag'n about fuel economy with a Cat motor ..
That's just my worthless speculation on the situation ..lol
