I wonder if there will be a situation where a trucker, or perhaps a group of truckers, will get harassed by a cop who interprets the letter of the law and hands out idling tickets for being stuck in a traffic jam. I can see it happening or happening one of these days. Then said trucker will probably one day go off the deep end. There's going to be a lot of angry truckers in the future. But where's a good old fashioned "we're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore" smackdown? We're not organized enough to stop the world by shutting down its freight.

Please someone tell me what an APU is..
What about the generators I have read about in ads for new trucks?
And well pets... That's an easy fix. It's not negotiable for me anyway. I wouldn't go out on the road without a pet.

crazymama - sorry don't know what APU is, but about the generators. There expensive, when my hubby was o/o we looked at them, but with gas prices, insurance and our family to support - couldn't afford one. Now that he's company again, Smith has generators on some of their trucks - testing them they say. Hubby's froze up twice on a 24 hour layover, not a good thing. But over all he says they are nice - quiets things down alot and helps with the fuel cost.

you and your hubby were looking at apu's Some have heat/ac, and plug in's some only have heat or ac depends on the model and how much you are willing to spend.
When you say the generator froze up on your hubby's truck it was his apu that froze up.
if you want to know what a APU is do a search for Apu on the net you will find alot of info on them. -
Alternate Power Unit.

Thank you
Just one more thing I will either negotiate for or save my own money for. I won't be in an uncomfortable truck. I will also want to have a backup ready. That may sound really wasteful. But if a person is going to be on the road that much it can't hurt to learn how to be a little self sufficient. Besides, if I have a 2nd unit on hand and someone elses unit goes out when it's 110 degrees out, they may be willing to pay premium price for it. The only thing that would mess up my theory is if they are too large to carry a spare.

Did they go ahead and make a weight waiver for APUs, since these things weigh like 400 pounds? Or is that pure BS and they'll still bust you for being over on your drives?
-
They weigh alot. Having two even if you could afford them would about kill you in extra weight
-
Wow... Too bad they weigh that much.
So what is Idle Air?
This right here is something that would make me really nervous. I like to be comfortable. I don't mind being a little warm but I hate being cold.

Idle Air is a service you can buy membership for. See those big vacuum tube things coming down into the trucks at truck stops? That's Idle Air. It has a/c, heat, and internet connection.
