Think NY is bad, wait till California new law takes effect in 2008.
Idle the truck for 5 minutes every hour. APU's may be subject to this too.
Pet in vehicle is no exception.

I found this on the web. looking for the rules and regs about APU
epa.gov/smartway.idle-state.htm
New york code of rules and regulation
Subpart217-3 Iding prohibition for Hevavy Duty Vehicles
But! ???????
: 217-3.3 Exceptions
(c) A diesel or nondiesel fueled engine is being used to provide power for an
auxiliary purpose,such as loading,discharging,mixing or processing cargo;
controlling cargo temperature;construction;lumbering;oil or gas well servicing;faring;or when operation of engine is required for the porpose of maintenance
(F) A diesel fueled truck is to remain motionless for period exceeding two
hours,and during which period the ambient temperture is continuously
below 25 degrees F. I perfer brickmans reply -
Next they'll be carting you off to jail for idling overnight. Sounds like you need some kind of temperature recording device to prove the temps were below 25 long enough to be used in court.
-
This is a strong case for an APU on the truck.
Like it or lump it, all the States will eventually adopt universal no idle ordinances. This will affect all trucking operations;
Besides the use of one makes economic sense. Take the Willis unit for example it consumes 1 qt of fuel per hour going flat scat: what does your 500HP big engine consume per hour? It doesn't take a mathematician to calculate the savings over a months use. The engine wear and tear on the big engine can also be calculated as reduced overal life. In short big bucks!
Food for thought.

I totally agree! Screw Ny and California. Ban them or just say No to cally/NY frieght..

I guess we all have to get some sort of pet in the truck. They will let you idle if you have a dog in the truck!! Go figure, it's ok for us to die of heat stroke or hyperthermia but not a dog!!!
-
Wonder what the regulations are for idling if you have Sleep Apnea and have to have power to operate your CPAP for sleeping or you'll die. It would be tough for anyone to stop you from using your CPAP in court if the DOT allows the use of one to be a driver.

I already did. I can't find either one in my map book. -
It's like anything else in this business: Might makes Right!
No one stuck together, no one took a real stand. Now here we are.
I wrote my people, did anyone else?...other than to throw a one liner at them?
The sad part of ridiculous legislation like this is that someone is going to have to die to bring the problem to light & get legislators to rethink their postulations.
When it does happen, everyone better get on their horses then.
Otherwise it'll just set a precedent that it's ok to kill truckdrivers in the name of saving a buck on fuel.
So sad. I'm glad I don't have much longer to live.
I'm so tired of being frustrated at politicians for coming out with such stupid rules/laws.
I feel like Don Quiote' waving my sword at deaf & dumb windmills. -
I agree, the head line will simply read "Truck driver dies, due to anti idle law" and most that read it won't understand what that means.
I don't think that we should have to loose one hard working person to get this changed. Something should be done.
We have laws about cruel and unusual punishment, for our justice system, why in the world would any government think that this doesn't fall under that category?
