I see the remnants of it from time to time. It was before my time. Did any of you ever use it? How was it? Did it go out of business because it was a retarded idea, or just managed poorly?

It was mostly a failed regulation. Some metro area started with this " Air pollution" Ozone stuff.. and nobody paid any attention to it. Some truck stops started implementing those idle air systems and not many people were using them.
One reason most people didn't use them was because the truck mfg's started making trucks "Idle Compliant" or whatever trucks. So they were legal to idle.
All the O/O's with those good trucks were parking outside the metro area's. There weren't abiding by the regs and the police weren't enforcing it out in the rural areas.

So, the idle air systems didn't last long for a few reasons.

It was started with a big grant from the feds. There were some companies that contracted with them to provide the service for their trucks. The system provided HVAC, and for additional charges, internet access and cable tv. I tried it but my biggest gripe was that if the truck that use my parking place before me had a driver that smoke some nasty cigars, or emitted some fouler odors, that same smell would come into my truck. I tried spraying Febreeze into the air intake but gave up and stopped using it.

That wasn't the first thing tried either. Any of you old hands remember Park'n'View?

I sure do! How many times those little bumps in the parking spaces got run over and destroyed so they didn't work for the next driver.

There was also a lawsuit by an O/O team Driver. Wife went in for a shower, found husband dead from Carbon Monoxide poisoning. That pretty much bankrupted the already failing company.

Three reasons I know of were. 1)They were either broken and parking spots were coned off.
    2) head in parking sitting nose to nose. So not the most private. 3) and cost of using them was like dealing with some ripoff cable or satellite plans. Felt like a time share.
The only ones we had in these parts was at TA’s. They had the big acreage. No one else had either the room or desire.

I agree with some of the other posts about the cleanliness of the units that were put into the cabs. It was very easy to contract any germs or illnesses that were in the tubing. Still they were welcome when you needed their services especially if your ac or heat wasn't working. Another problem was most truckstops had them in the front of their parking lots and some drivers would park in those spots, not pay and refuse to move.

I've only seen them at one place (Breezewood TA) and I've never seen anyone use them. I remember looking it to once years ago and it was expensive.

    D.Tibbitt Thanks this.
