I believe this is an issue to which there will ALWAYS be opposing sides. There are those who do not have the ability to have APUs and thus need this type of service. Those that do or can have APUs don't seem to understand that.
We want you to be able to park. We just need some ac on occasion.
idleaire to return from dead as something else!!!

Exactly. Orange cones don't buy fuel. Trucks do. If the truckstop would rather have a bunch of orange cones in their parking lot, and hire a kid on a golf cart to keep us out, then so be it. I'll buy my fuel someplace else.
-
Okay, so let me ask you Mr. Mustard.........was the lot full? Was there no other space available or does it just tick you off that some are reserved?
I'd also like to know your solution for those who don't and can't have an APU. Thanks for your ideas.badman976 Thanks this. -
well there's 2 different sides.. those who love it like me, and those who have no use for it and hate it. i respect the other sides opinion and refuse to get into a text war.
The Challenger and Texas-Nana Thank this. -
I said in an earlier post, just ten minutes ago, if I park in an Idleaire spot, it's because there is nothing else available. Most of the time, no one bothers me. There have been times though, I had TO LEAVE the truckstop because there were spots on the regular row and they wouldn't allow me to park in the idle aire. Bloomington Il comes to mind. I had to pull out of there, drive 2o miles north to the flying J, and there were over 50 empty parking spots in two rows that had idleaire. When I called Idleaire and complained about the kid on the golf cart, they told me it was not their policy to reserve spots. LIE. That was 2 years ago. That was the LAST time I've bought fuel from a TA. -
I do apologize Mr. Mustard......I missed that in your post. They shouldn't have made you move if there were no other spots open and there wer 50 idle aire spots open.
I agree with you on that.
What are your thoughts for solutions for those who can not have an APU? -
My company (JB Hunt) didn't buy APU's they bought Espar heaters. The fan runs off the batteries and it draws it's heat from burning diesel fuel. The amount of fuel it uses is insignificant. The Espar is mounted under your bunk, and it takes about an hour or two to install. I have it on good authority that JB purchased them for $700 a unit. A good APU can cost ten times that amount. As long as you have a good set of batteries, it will heat your sleeper for about 10-12 hours. My only complaint is if you have one battery in the mix with a dead cell, the Espar is pretty much useless, it will run them down in an hour or two. Obviously, on warmer days when it's above 40, the thing works a lot better than it does when it's in the teens. As for summer time, I use a lot of fans. I have two of them I bought from walmart that came with a 12 volt power brick. Go into pilot, get a replacement cord for a tv, plug it in the fan, it works great. I got two of them blowing on me, and I try to take my breaks after the sun goes down, that way I'm not baking in the sun. If it's too unbearable, I just park somewhere where I can go ahead and idle until it gets dark out.Texas-Nana Thanks this. -
you know i have never seen idleair at a loves and thats why i continue to use them...if it has them yellow tubes in the lot I am not spending my money there.
I was snowed in in normal Il and I backed in to an idleair spot and IDLED my truck all night...the attendent asked me to move and I told him I was stuck and spinning out and if idleair wanted to pay the tow truck bill then they could move me....lol -
I agree with Mr Mustard about spending $400 in fuel at a place where ya cant park. I have probably fueled maybe 2 or 3 times maximum at a TA in the last couple years. I spend my cash on fuel at the J
I care about the environment so deeply, that I idle my 500 HP yellow APU, in an effort to save emissions from powerplants having to make up this energy that idleair would otherwise afford me to stay comfortable. -
Landshark, I tell people I'm not "idling" I'm "standing". I explain that "standing isn't the same as parking and idling only happens when you park". Oddly most people believe me. I have no idea WHY lol but they do. And at Wal-Marts I glare at the security guards and announce I'm in menopause get hot flashes and become violent if overhot and thus I'm going to idle. Simply put I scare the bejubees outta those old men.
Mr. Mustard we also use our espar heater when it's cold. The ac we needed when unable to idle due to company policy at the time. Now I'm just mean and idle anyway. *smiles* Thank you for accepting my apology for missing that part of your post.
