doesn't take long to reach that.A few times checking in with the guard shack you would reach that.what was your percentage idling during your brk?
Tell management that when they turn off the power to their homes, you'll shut your truck down when you're on your break. Having said that, what you're getting is probably a computer generated message.
I would recommend saying nothing. I have been very high on the idle list for years - nearly 5 now. There are much more important things than idle ratio, such as on-time percentage and your safety score. I have been over the limit ever since I started with Swift, and I even got written up for it once. Just once, and it really didn't mean anything. Try to keep idling to a minimum, but idle when you need to. And don't respond to those messages.
For what its worth, I got a message last week or so, saying Idle time should be under 15%. I shut down whenever I can, even if I'm doing a drop n hook. Today I got a message saying I was in the top 5% nationwide with very low Idle time. I have no idea if its because I shut the truck down all the time or what. I'm almost done with my first year at Swift and none of this was every explained to me when I was with my trainer. Of course, we ran constantly as a team, so the truck was always running from mid-Dec to mid-Jan last year.
I'd say "wow, thanks, I didn't realize that I was so close to being TOP DOG ,,, you can count on me to work hard and crack the top 3 next month and I'll be #1 before the end of the year!!"
Umkaay, I'm jumping in here. Jeronimoooooooe! Brrr. This water's cold. What are the current freight rates in your area? Let's say $2.65 a mile, (I'm too lazy to check.) So, at 60 miles per hour, that generates $159 in revenue per hour to the truck. In 11 driving hours, that maxxes out at $1,749 per day. Using those numbers, if you're driving 2,200 miles per week, you're generating $5,830 in revenue for the company. Swift's cheap, so their customers aren't paying that much. If you''re parked for 10 hours, and your truck burns ½ gallon per hour at idle, that's 5 gallons. How much is fuel in your area? Let's say $2.80 per gallon, which would be $14 per night. If you're only idling 3 nights per week, that's $42 per week. Not even the cost of 1 night in a motel room in a week. What is your pay like? .34 per mile? That would be $748 per week, if you drive 2,200 miles. A lazy man can make that in a factory and be home every night. So, Swift drivers, earn somewhere around 12 % of the wealth they create for the company. Swift keeps 88%. That's a honking huge chunk of the pie you baked for them, with all your hard work. You could be a broker and make as much making phone calls. Don't seems right. Those are all lazy, I'll just punch guesses into a calculator figures, though. What is Swift's gross revenue in a year? Divided by what, 18,000 trucks? So, how much wealth have you created for the company and you're getting threatened over $14? $14 that could keep you from freezing to death in winter, or broiling in summer. They got the big, family sized bucket of chicken, with the mashed potatoes n gravy, the biscuits, and the 2 liter of cola, which they kept for themselves and they gave you a couple of chicken wings. Then, you get threatened over, “Hey, get your greasy fingers off of our napkins, you darn, dirty driver!” When it was your hard work that provided the dinner in the first place. But what actually matters is that you're happy there. If you like it, why change?
Interesting rant although I don't work for Swift anymore I'm retired. But you just described about 90% of all companies that hire workers, what the worker gets paid and what the company makes off them. And depending where you live it's not easy finding a warehouse job that you can make $18.70 that's what 748 a week makes in a 40hour work week. But not my problem anymore I'm just chilling in Montana now just riding my Harley in the mountains.
Could be a ploy to shame you into not idling at all!! Ask to see the statics. And next time your at the office ask theme why the air conditioning is on and the bathroom lights left on. It's getting to the point where they expect you to suffer in the heat or cold so the owner can afford another luxurious trip to the Cayman islands!
