I am an O/O. I lease onto Arnold Transportation (for the time being anyway). When I bought my truck, the company said I couldn't carry my cat. I told them "Wanna make a bet?" They lost the bet. Cat (as well as any other kind of long/short haired animal including human) hair does have a tendency to clog up the A/C coils in the truck. I know how to clear it though and do it in less than 30 minutes with the removal of a panel, the fan unit and a can of coil cleaner and a water hose. This takes care of most of the cig smoke smell that is circulated by the A/C also. Yeah, California set some high bars with the CARB rules on idling (even APU's are banned). Want to change it, get rid of the politicians that put those rules in place (do this at the ballot box, not some other way please as there is just too darn much paperwork). Someone commented that "As California goes, so goes the Nation". So true and so bad for the nation. I refuse any loads going anywhere where my freedom of choice has been taken away by the government (Never set one foot in Cal, NY, OH, ILL, IN, NJ.). The only way to get things to where we are not risking our lives to make someone else a dime is to not go where they say if it endangers you/us as drivers. As far as I have been able to determine, we, as truck drivers, are not covered under any law that concerns our well being and personnal safety. If anyone has knowledge and can place a link on here about it being contrary, please do as we all need to know it.....Rant Closed (for now)....Drive/Ride Safe

Have you ever thought about what the dog hair does to a cooling system inside of your truck. Dogs in big trucks ive always thought this was a dumb thing to do.

I agree with you completely, and I am a smoker. Why can't one just wait to get to a stop and have a quick burn? I, again, am a smoker, God Forgive me, but I don't even smoke in my own vehicle, let alone someone else's. A friend of mine drove for schneider for a little over a year and told me a horrific story of a "loaner-rig" that he had in spite of his rig being repaired. Upon opening the door, a horrible stench fell upon him and almost knocked him over. In my opinion, that's the kind of rig that I want to avoid, but you are right about the choice, or lack thereof, of rigs that haven't been smoked in. Your best bet is to be an O/O if you want a clean truck.
I respect everyone else's space, why can't they respect mine? Oh, and to top it off, if I've got to smoke, I will stop and have a burn outside and enjoy nature, wait a couple of minutes, then head back in. We all know how we smokers drag our butts in with us, if you know what I mean.

I used to smoke, but I never did it in the truck. I didn't need one that bad and besides I didn't need that smoke smell with me 24/7. Last company I drove for they gave me an empty truck that just reeked of cigarette smoke and I refused to drive it till it was cleaned. They threw a fit about till I claimed it could be considered a safety issue. That shut the shop up real quick.

If it is cool enough at night, I like to shut the truck off. I sleep better. But I think this no-idle business is a crock. It saves fuel, but what good is a driver who can't get any sleep because it's too hot? And what happens this winter when the temps drop? My company says the trucking companies are working on generators that will keep your truck warm in the winter with the engine off and cool in the summer when the weather is hot. I say why don't they wait until these generators have been invented before they pass no idling laws?

Rational thought applied before passing laws? Madness!

Well, I now know for a fact that I can't run a space heater in my truck without running the batteries flat. My laptop was enough to kill my truck dead last night. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about getting stuck in a no idle state this winter. I'm not taking the chance on waking up a meat popsicle.

my friend and his wife take there dog with em all the time and they don't argue the point of idling and were in califorina and i know drivers will avoid califorina at all costs if they can. now lets say there on the east coast and it's like 40 below freezing um i'm not gonna freeze for no one not only that what about my performance also as well as possible death from severe heat or cold? i could understand if it was not to hot ot cold. and did they ever think of (LAW SUITS). i think it can work but there going about it the wrong way i'll have an open mind on it. i think it should be mandatory that (apu's be installed on all rigs at the expence of the goverment wich = tax payers us or incentives. and from my understanding the apu's don't even meet califorinas guide lines but i don't know how true that is. if i may say something to the newbies out there no one gives a crap about you the company you work for is always right and your wrong and yes most truckers do have cameres and laptops for proof to cover there own butts i had a friend drop off a load and she was in her berth sleeping and a while later i don't remember how long after she was asleep he heard a gun fire and it was a murder scene or if your company don't keep up there equitment it's never there fault it's your fault even if you have to use a truck ramp to stop you can be fined points on your record even arrested not all truck ramps have penalites. we just have to look out for each other cause no one else will look out for us

Hope this is not too far off topic, but it's something I have been wondering.

In a no-idle state, or a no-idle area, they don't want you running the engine for more than five minutes, and you can be ticketed if you do. So, you install an APU so you don't have to run your engine, but can still keep temperatures in a safe range. Now, the motor is not running but the APU is, which is still some sort of a running motor.

Could the law somehow be interpreted to make that running APU a ticketable offense under the no-idle laws?
