If everyone else jumped off a cliff... Well, its not quite that dismal! Congrats on the truck, and good luck. There is one thing for certain, if you never try, you'll never succeed.

Just because they didn't ask you or I, doesn't mean they don't have a plan. And yes, I AM an ole farm boy that pulls hopper bottoms around the sticks, its worked out well for me! :biggrin_255:

    Congrats on the truck.

If we all had the attitude of some of the failures on here, we would probably all fail.

    Lean into it!

Gears, JustSonny and sweezly1 Thank this.

Good looking truck,Hedon:biggrin_25525:,the blue ''details'' 'er nicely. I have a cousin that started in the summer of '08 and he runs under his own authority and he is doing just fine,it CAN be done.Don't let any body else tell you different.Take care of your truck, and she'll take care of you.The ''inframes'' won't get ya, it's the attention to the little things that will. A good ''walk around'' and consistant, regular preventive maintenance will make you more money than you know, and any of us can crawl under a rig with a grease gun,you can't beleive how many times i have seen little things that would have turned into big things if i had not got 'em early after seeing 'em while simply greasing the rig and being attentive to everything else while under there, you don't have to be a mechanic,a good little common sence will go a long way.

Good Luck to you,and enjoy it! Oh,by the way,i'm just an 'ol dumb farmboy that yanks a hopper around in the sticks too,and my 'ol truck is a '90 model and she still has the original motor in 'er:biggrin_25525:.

One other thing you might want to remember,so as not to get discouraged, your not competing for ALL of Wal-Mart's buisiness,so to speak, your looking for 1 load at a time, and if my memory serves me right,Wal-Mart started with 1 hand-shake and a friendly welcome at 1 store and grew from there:biggrin_25525:.A good smile and friendly hand-shake don't cost you very much, your customer will remember you,one way or the other.

    AMEN!!!!!!

I started this journey into the "wide world of wanderlust" back in Oct 09. I'm going to follow through on an obligation I made to the school district I drive a school bus for before I actually "launch", i.e., driving school, training, etc. I spent some time reading posts on this forum before I started asking drivers here to join my "friends" list. I read and read and read. Then I asked some of the folks who seemed to have a "right spirit" to be on my "list of friends". What I've found here lately though is that my list would get really long if I kept adding to it. Yep, there's a lot of "right spirit" here on the forum. This thread is proof. More than just a couple of my friends have weighed in here on this thread. I don't have any experience driving the big trucks, but 56 years of life on this planet has given me some great experience in how to pick my friends. Thanks!

Thanks guys! I really appreciate all the words of encouragement.

We're excited to be finally heading out there in our own truck. This is a move we've been planing for a very long time now. I know there is a lot of negativity around this joint at times but we don't let it bother us. The way I see it, we have done everything in our power, while planning, to give ourselves the best chance for success and now we're just going to have to take the leap and let the chips fall where they may.

One good thing is that we set the truck loan up so that even if we need to park it and hire back on with a company for a while (until rates pick up) we wouldn't have any problem making the truck payment from our salary. And we're paying cash for the trailer so that won't be an issue. So worst case we would only have to worry about truck payment and insurance which is entirely possible with our typical company take-home. That's nice for our peace of mind.

You know... we are always hearing some guys around this site telling us how trucking is nothing like it used to be back in the day and how o/o are on the verge of extinction... I think the truth is that we all wish we could have bought our first truck back in 1970 when a new Pete cost $347.00 and they threw in the trailer for free. Back in the days when fuel was $0.13 per gallon and every time you pulled into a shipper or receiver they would throw you a parade and offer to take you home to their house for a nice hot shower and good night's sleep. Back in the days when there was no log book, every driver drove 22 hours a day and the local cops would supply a driver with any drugs they might need to keep up the pace. Back in the days when every time a driver walked into a restaurant women swooned and the men lined up to buy the driver dinner and cigarettes and various leather goods. Back in the days when small children fought for the right to polish a driver's chrome cause that driver was a god to them....

I think we would all have preferred to start out in those good old days... it's just that what with being 5 years old at the time that wasn't an option for Stace and I. So we're starting when we can. I know these aren't great times to become owner operators. I think we all know that. But we already missed the good old days and who knows how long we might have to wait for the magical mystical time to come when these old guys would decide the time is finally right for us and give us their blessing.

We can't just sit around waiting forever for things to be perfect. So we're planning as much as we can to protect ourselves and then we have to stop planning, take a deep breath and take the leap. That's what we're doing right now.

I'll let you know how it goes.
