If otr/regional paid for all hours, what would be fair?

Here is the problem with the thread, paying a driver by the hour is in and of itself not a big deal, I'll give you an example, let's say that my driver makes or averages 1340.00 a week (I am using really simple numbers here) and without the 34 hour reset that means that he is in/around or driving the truck for 134 hrs that week.

Fine, I'll pay him/her 10.00 per hour for EVERY ONE of those hours, whether you are eating/sleeping/driving/loading or BS'ing, so you are going to make 1340.00 per week, which coincidently is exactly what you would have made on cpm, but now you are all warm and fuzzy because you are getting paid for ALL hours.

The problem is, is this discussion JUST about being paid hourly? Or about making more money weekly? This is the same problem people have when shopping for a job and the ONLY question they ask is what does it pay per mile. The truth is, it doesn't matter!

It's not about how much you make (or think you make), it's about how much you actually IN YOUR POCKET take home at the end of the week, and IF the company has a driving position that FITS what you are needing for home time.

If you want to work under that pay scale or something similar, go to work for a union shop. Nobody here is going to stop you. But I really don't want you messing with what I'm working for, thank you. Business must compete and they will find work arounds to such "ideas". Be careful what you wish for.

Sounds like instead of making a few jobs better, you're trying bring the rest DOWN to a more "equitable" level ... where have I heard this before?

that is a false statement. there are company's out there paying that and more. the problem otr drivers have they are divided they don't want to fight for fair treatment and when they get mad they just job hop from one job to another
with the BS hope of it being better.

until drivers start sticking together or lawyers are able to sue these company's out of business for causing wrecks for using a pay per mile scam nothing will change.

maybe the government will do something for the people and include drivers to min wage and overtime laws.

your not adding ot wages to that number stan. i think drivers just want to be paid for the work they do. driving your truck pay me, fueling your truck pay me, waiting 5 hours to get loaded, unloaded pay me, sitting on the side of the road for 3 hours waiting for a repair truck to fix your truck pay me. is that to much to ask for??

i am doing work on your behalf, is it wrong to ask for compensation for that?

i don't think to many drivers will disagree with this statement, if a driver is logging 70 hours in 8 days we all know that driver has probably put in another 20 or 30 hours off the clock, loading , unloading, fueling, etc. etc..

 

that the economy will not support those wages. there lots of companys that pay by the hour in the 20 to 30.00 per hour range.

You don't know how good you've got it in the trucking industry and on the "pay per mile scam". If you think it's all bad for drivers then don't drive. Show us what you can do in obamaville in your hometown. Tell us who is going to let you work 30 hours week OVERtime, every week. Or, go to work in the oil/gas patch. They pay by the hour ... knock yourself out.

BTW, you can not name one driver who is not in probationary status or in an OTJ training program, making "less then minimum wage". So enough with the silly talk. Go talk to a a bus-boy in a restaurant in your town, they will tell you what minimum wage is, otherwise, as a truck driver you are not making minimum wage and don't have a clue what minimum wage is really like.

 

I've been in this business (auto/vehicle haul) for over twenty years, started with one truck, I think I have a FAR better grasp of what the economy in MY segment can handle than someone from outside of MY segment does.

Show me ONE, JUST ONE company out there that is paying a "run of the mill" drop and hook driver OTR 30.00 an hour, I'll wait, and if you somehow can manage to do that, why are YOU not working there?

 

i have it very good in the trucking industry thank you very much. i like it when folks like you resort statements like quit or make statement on some thing they know nothing about, like how many ot hours i work.

i am trying to have a discussion about things that i think are a problem in the industry and should be changed in my opinion. please if you don't think they should be changed then state your reasons.

what i am trying figure is why you think it is wrong to fight for better working conditions or benefits, why dose a person have to quit? the company has the jobs i have the labor is there a problem with negotiating with a company?

why do i have to take it or leave it?
