Okay. I've had some time to mull it over. Yes, there are advantages to fueling for the trip. I do occasionally do that myself. But not very often. Normally, I fuel for the trip home, while ensuring I will have enough fuel to get back to where I can fuel when I come back out. Sometimes, that means keeping a half tank. I don't want to fool with fuel on my way to pick up that next load and some of the places I take time off are pretty remote.
That said, I'm not sure I would be comfortable leaving just 1/8 on fuel at the end of the load. Two reasons: you may get a preplan that you won't have time to stop and fuel on your way to your shipper. And, your hands are tied as to options on fueling points. You will have to go where it's close rather than where it's cheap.
I prefer to fuel for the week. I will check prices online in the various truckstop websites and figure out actual cost. Then, weighing the advantage of the tax, choose my fuel stops way in advance of my need for them. On Wednesdays, I do not fill up. If I have to fuel on Wednesay (cutoff day, for those not with Swift) I drop enough to get to my destination for the day plus 1/4 to 3/8 tank, which is enough to get me somewhere that it might cost less. That $400 or more that I do not drop on fuel goes on my settlement.
I try to plan my fuel for the week. Planning for each trip is just too shortsighted for me.

You should be getting a good sized discount with Swift, atleast 10 cents off the price. If not, then they are making money off your fuel purchases. Paying cash would screw them out of their/your money...
Also, that .34 cents is a write off.scottied67, The Challenger and Injun Thank this. -
when i was at swift if the load i was under on wednesday didn't drop or tcall till thursday or friday it wouldn't matter if i fueled on wednesday cause the fuel went with the trip no the day..
if not under dispatch it went with the day but either way..
is this not the same now??
on another note fueling for the week makes sense as does fueling for home..
coming out of the house empty and usually in the red why would you want to put $500 in fuel right away that doesn't add up to mescottied67 Thanks this. -
if you are in an area of oregon that borders another state, you will notice that the price of fuel is only a few cents lower the bordering states but has no tax on the fuel so you are paying for the fuel and not getting any tax benefits from it
a few weeks back Jubitz in portland was $3.89 a gallon while just 54 miles up the road theres a small truckstop which takes all the fuel cards, was $3.93 a gallon but i get the washington fuel tax with that price so it just doesn't make sense to stop in portland
i can see if you didn't plan on it and you used for fuel then you thought you may have to get fuel their but i would only get enough to get out never fill up..The Challenger, Injun and scottied67 Thank this. -
My experience is fuels go with the day. Often, on a Thursady t-call or drop, I can get rid of it on Wednesday, like I did last night. That load wasn't supposed to deliver until this morning. It turned out to be a drop, as I expected it was. I was e-called from it before 1500 Arizona time, so it should go on this week's settlement. If I've put in 1,000 or more miles on a load that doesn't deliver until Thursday or Friday and that appointment is firm, I will sometimes t-call it back to myself somewhere along the line or pull my tractor payment out of my maintenance account. It depends on the load and who is in the office.

Why use your cash, the comdata fee is only .34 for each transaction at the pump. Remember you are paying your taxes at the pump. Go off the books and you will be buying yourself a book keeping headache. You will have to keep all your receipts, make copies and send them in to Swift every month to square up your IFTA taxes.scottied67 Thanks this. -
I'm not sure what Swift's discounts are.... But they should be published somewhere to where you can view them. To give you an example of discounts, I'll show you a couple of my carrier's discount locations....
OKLAHOMA CITY TA EXIT 140... Cash price today is $3.879 My price is $3.61.
KNOXVILLE TA EXIT 374... Cash price today is $3.829 My price is $3.62.
(The TA at exit 369 doesn't give us a discount. To fuel there I would have to pay cash price of $3.799... For fuel 18 cents cheaper, I'd drive the extra 5 miles.... Even if it means going out of my way)
ONTARIO MILLIKEN ROAD... Bothe east & west have a cash price of $4.399 today. My price at both is $4.17.
Now those are just a few examples to show you the unpublished prices... Swift is a carrier of 13,000 trucks & should get the same discounts if not a greater discount because of their size. But in able to take advantage of the cheaper discounted fuel, you have to use your carrier's fuel card. Other wise you'll be paying $4.399 a gallon of fuel with cash versus $4.17 a gallon with the card.
Which one is going to save you money?
Injun, Rotten and scottied67 Thank this. -
