How do I fight an IFTA audit or should I just not fight it and pay the$2100? I have no way to tell if they are just slapping me with a bogus fine unless I have an ifta attorney look over my paper work. Do not even know where to find an ifta attorney. I can't figure how or where they came up with their figures. My trucks drove the same routes everyday. There shouldn't have been any problems. What is up with the monthly fine/penalty of 11%?
What the hell is wrong with this country? Do you really need to ask that ?![]()

What's the fine for? Under-reported miles? Fuel?
-
That doesnt' mean the miles were the exact same. Maybe they took an exit for a truck stop. Drove around the parking lot two or three times. By the time they get rolling, you're one mile more on the odometer than you're reporting. Maybe there was a detour one day. The driver missed an exit, etc.
The IFTA mileage is real miles.
Now, if it's fuel. Did you report all the fuel purchased? Did you try and hide fuel in cheap states to offset your gallons purchased in order to lessen the burden for all those unpaid expensive states?
What's the method used to keep track of miles and fuel? Do you use a fuel card that keeps track? Or receipts?
As for the fine. if you owed something, and it went unpaid, then there's a penalty. And interest from the time it was supposed to be paid. The government's 1%/mo isn't that bad of a rate, really. Ends up only being 12% for the year. Credits cards could charge 30% compounded.
Why are you blaming the government for this? -
My guess is, he didn't accurately keep track of his mileage and doesn't have all his fuel receipts.

So many people do not take paying taxes seriously.
I hear the states are worse than feds.
But the IFTA will penalize even for calualating wrong on the form.
If wanting to get an attoney, try calling around for an accounting attoney. -
Something don't sound right here? They only charge 50 dollars for filing late a quarter.
Way I do mine is add logbook miles up take trip sheets and plug in zip codes in pc miler and print report. The miles are generally 2-3% higher
on logbooks so I add the difference and plug in fuel purchases. The ifta is online here and it does the calculations for you. -
mcgoo422000, that's the way I used to do it. Starting the 4th Qtr of last year, I just have a note pad and I write down the last four of the odometer every time I cross a state line. It's a little tedious, but it's also very exact.
Also, my fuel card can give me a report by quarter for tractor fuel purchased by state and totals it. No miscalculations there.
And, with Ohio, their tax site gives you a spreadsheet to fill out with all your numbers. The spreadsheet is a failsafe. If numbers don't match, it alerts you. It also does all the calculations for you. Ohio wants you to print out that form AND the hand written IFTA form to be mailed in. Basically, in case of a typo, you have the spreadsheet version as well.

Once the new quarter is available, it will be posted here. Even if you're out of state, use this and you shouldn't mess up your calculations ever on your IFTA form. Then just put the data from the spreadsheet onto your official IFTA form.bullhaulerswife Thanks this. -
Here's her other thread about the situation.

Actually couple years ago, my wife made a $20 miscaluation on our IFTA and they fined us $125.
But then droped the fine when I found they'd had made a mistake on refiguring it for us. -
An IFTA audit assessment is a tax not a fine. IFTA assessments are levied based on under reporting fuel to the correct state.CJAaggregatehauler Thanks this.
