And what horse owner will trust a beat up $10,000 truck to get his animal safely to its destination ? A good looking rig is important in getting and keeping business .
But there's always people on U-ship looking to have horses hauled cheap .

I am not looking into getting a true semi truck, 5 mpg-8 mpg is just not my cup of tea, looking at small trucks. Something that gets 10-15 mpg.

    Something like this: http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/1492935922.html

I do not need it to have a bed or a sleeper, the trailer has a sleeper. A sleeper is extra un-wanted weight.

those small freightliners -are- crazy: http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/1476019726.html

I don't -have- 10k to throw, I have 2k that I can put down. Financing on a truck older then 10 years is #### near impossible to get. I may be able to find a reasonably priced dealer Chevy 4500. Let me look.

No , no no , not a Ford with a 6.0 . :biggrin_25513::biggrin_25513: . They are always breaking down and use a lot more fuel than a Dodge or Chevy . The Chevy 4500 is a good truck and unlike the Ford and Dodge the hood flips forward like a big truck for easy engine access .
But if you only have 2K and you're going to use that for a down payment you're flirting with disaster . You should have at least a $10,000 cash reserve in case something expensive breaks .

For the record: I am not going all out in this. There is a reason.

I have a job. I am very satisfied at my job. I make 4k easily a month, usually more. At my current job. The job I am not quitting to be a horse transporter. Unless miles drop down to like 1000 I am happy here.

This trailers original purpose was and remains to transport MY horses, which number 5, 3 mares, 1 stud, and 1 gelding.

The 'business' is a secondary thing I will do either on the side or hire someone to do when I get bookings. While still pulling in my cushy paycheck (which was 2200 this week). For the foreseeable future I do not plan to go all in with this as I did once, its a side project. Hence IF the truck needed something, while hauling horses, I have no issues getting it fixed. I do have savings, but I am NOT blowing it all on something I can finance.

The goal is the be ready to go as a horse transporter if I should decide to go that route, and do a few runs to build reputation.

I guess you must mean my post.

The actual fact on IFTA is not on the rating of the vehicle called GVWR.

    link http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/business/carriers/ifta.htm

Qualified motor vehicle - a motor vehicle used, designed, or maintained for transportation of persons or property and:
    • Having two axles and a gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight exceeding 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms; or
    • Having three or more axles regardless of weight; or
    • Is used in combination, when the weight of such combination exceeds 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms gross vehicle or registered gross vehicle weight. Qualified motor vehicle does not include recreational vehicles.
You are correct on the CDL requirement though, but IFTA has always been on the actual weight.

From what I am researching, because the trailer is 16,000 empty, if I use it period for commercial purposes, its going to be IFTA, Exciss, and Class 8.

    Or something of that nature.

Because, it will weigh 16000lb + 1000lb tack + up to 8000lb horses.

Which is 25k in the trailer alone.

+ any truck sized to pull it and we are well over 26k >.<

Maybe I shall just go head and use it for me horses and me horses alone >.>
