IF it's the same route in LA, then back out, you won't have to write down odometer mileage but one trip.

It should be the same mileage, every trip.

As far as the ELD thing if your truck engine is 2000 or newer you have to have an ELD in your truck from what I understand of the new laws but it would be a good idea to talk to a DOT officer to verify. they are really cracking down on people not using eld's now that the deadline has passed and I wouldn't want that ticket. The ELD will track your miles in each state so you can just print out the report every quarter and fill the paperwork out from that. They make all kinds of apps for tracking fuel purchases and mileage so that is another way you can keep track of things. Myself I use rigbooks and they have ifta and everything you need for that so it's pretty easy.

True. I personally am opting not to rely on my ELD for mile tracking. Last time I compared it to my own numbers, it was off. I posted the results in the link below (comment #42). I do see myself eventually relying on technology entirely. Now that almost everyone is under ELD, the technology for mile tracking will be much more precise.

Using KeepTruckin ELD? Are your IFTA reports accurate? Ours are always wrong

Ultimately what IFTA wants is all the miles driven in each state. No odometer will be asked. However, writing down the odometer at the stateline makes it possible to calculate the miles driven in each state. Now, the ELD mile tracking works a little bit differently. It will just tell you the miles you drove per state and not mention the odometer.

At the end of the quarter, which is when it’s time to file IFTA, they will simply ask for the miles and gallons per state. It is during an IFTA audit that they will request additional documents whether it’s the odometers you wrote down, ELD driver logs, fuel receipts, ELD miles reports, etc.

If you have fixed routes, just keep track of the trips, and you’ll have all the numbers you need. No need to write at state line, etc.

That method amounts to a lot of estimating, and is not accurate. What happens when you go out of route in either state? What if you go somewhere else like to the mechanic shop? What about using PC? It’s much more accurate to write down the mileage, or rely on the ELD for tracking miles.

Elogs still record mileage from the ecm while on PC. I do agree with you that its not perfectly accurate, however it's legal and how almost all large fleets handle ifta

I don’t think he’s talking about relying on ELD for tracking miles.
