Can someone explain this? I know we report actual miles and gallons. Had a driver with engine problems that bought substantially more diesel in a quarter than normal but didn't run the extra miles to justify the extra diesel. Why would it be a problem to just subtract the extra diesel to keep the fuel mileage the same and not incur a rebate? Just a question it seems that the fuel tax has been paid at the pump and the miles are reported correctly so all states are getting paid to drive on their roads or is some state getting screwed in this scenario?

Why try to cheat the tax man? That's about one of the dumbest things a guy can do.. you are better off murdering someone

In an audit they’ll go by what’s on that truck fuel report. Personally I wouldn’t try manipulating what’s on the fuel report.
I suppose you could hide reporting some gallons if the driver paid cash and there isn’t a paper trail.
Having a wild swing in mpg could also trigger an audit so I get what you’re trying to do.
There’s no particular state getting shorted, it’s all the states that truck ran.
How much extra fuel are you talking about here? Any chance your driver is selling fuel off your card?D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
Sure tax is paid but reefer fuel doesn’t get reported on ifta.
Keep the reefer fill’s under 50 gallons and you’ll be fine. Example put 30 in the reefer tank and 15 gallons in the truck no one will ever figure it out.
Or one could simply pay cash now and then for some fuel and at reporting time some or all of those receipts disappear. -
You won't save much money by doing that though. The risk is not worth the reward in this case.

Not showing gallons for which you already paid the tax, in favor of improving mpg, so that you have less taxable gallons to report?
You'd have to solve the equation, if it is justified money wise but then the question remains if it is worth the risk? -
I reported 30 miles per gallon last quarter……300 miles on 10 gallons of fuel actual numbers.
They were very cranky. They want actual numbers they got them lol
Had lots of fuel left on the truck from last quarter and don’t use it much .(basically just exercise it to keep it alive) The system is flawed big time. It should be like gas just pay at the pump and let the state keep it. That way the states would compete against one another for the tax money ….it would be epicLast edited: Nov 10, 2024
