When I was in, there were lots of Mexicans joining various branches of the military. If they stayed 7 yrs. they could become US Citizens; pretty good deal. Not knocking them either, many fought and died in Vietnam. Only thing a recruiter had to see was a birth certificate. As far as high school diploma the recruiter only had to check "Sighted Diploma" on the paperwork. It's has always been easy to get a birth certificate or authenticate looking diplomas.

The USCMJ (United States Code of Military Justice) has no provisions to determine an option of civil or criminal proceedings. Immigration is covered by USCIS (United States Code of Immigration Service), in it is a provision to "fast track" any current or recently discharged non-citizen personnel. Here's the link:

When you join the military, even your state issued driver license basically has a non-expiring clause. The military ID, is equivalent to a US Passport...relieving the soldier from carrying an actual US Passport. However, if the soldier retires from military service, his/her retired ID does not carry the same international freedoms as the active military ID. The retired individual, must now maintain a current drivers license and a current up to date Passport for international travels.

You do NOT have to be a citizen to join the US Armed forces, But you do have to be a legal resident. Many people granted amnesty have brought many more family members (chain migration) but very few of the total number have applied for citizenship. They are happy to live here, get full benefits, work, and remain Mexican citizens for life. And their children born here have dual citizenship, both here and their parents home country.

For Trump to pay for the WALL, my suggestion is a 10% TAX on the money sent to Mexico, If the people here can afford to send it down, they don't need it and there are millions of dollars sent down every week via western union and money-gram.

A little off topic, but a good story. When I was in the Navy years ago, they had a recruiting office in Philippines. I was on a ship at the time doing port calls in Asia. A Philippina steward on the ship was a friend of mine. He told me how he joined the Navy. He and his buddy planned to join the Navy together, but he failed something, maybe the background check or physical, but his buddy passed everything. A few days before his buddy was to ship out to basic training in the states, he died, maybe a heart attack. The other guy took his enlistment package and showed up for the flight to the states. He made it just fine and when he finally revealed this story to me, he had about 10 yrs. active duty in the Navy. He is really a good guy and still an E-3 at the time because stewards had a hard time advancing in rank. Some were still E-3 when they retired. That's just the way it was "way back then."

I'm going to make ONE attempt to keep this thread on it's original discussion points, don't care about the wall, don't care about the waterfall effect of anchor babies!
During a declared state of war...WWII, carryover to Korea (police action) and Viet Nam (also police action), the legal residency requirement was waived to allow non-citizens a means to join the US Military. Since the dissolution of the draft, the residency requirements were once again addressed, since the "need" for enlistments no longer require any "mandatory service". Hence the required date line of 1989 for the Form I-551 and it's requirement to be current. However, one having this legal document that has a 10 year life, after completing 6 months of continuous active military service the renewal of Form I-551 is waived during the enlistment. The UCMJ does not allow it's personnel to assist legal residents in their course for naturalized citizenship, but does allow them the freedom of not having to "refresh" the I-551 document while in service.

I was born in the U.S. as were my parent's and their parent's, any further back immigration begins, This last year I had to show proof of citizenship to the state I reside in by means of a birth certificate. First time for that and I dont get it.
