Exactly, rerun8963. He cannot drive a truck requiring a CDL interstate, that's why I suggested looking for a job driving a straight truck under 26,000lbs GVW. No CDL required and he can cross state lines. I'm not suggesting it would be easy finding a company whose insurance company will let them hire 19yrs olds. But I think he'd have a better chance then applying for a job that required a CDL.

true....if he can indeed find such a job.......there are a few "courier" type places he can apply to...(non CDL) driving.

I'm kinda' in your same position, RI. Here's what to do...Don't give up!!

Talk to people - friends, neighbors, acquaintances and even strangers and tell them you are trying to get started in trucking. I got tips on driving jobs from strangers that I happened to talk to.

Networking....talking to people....making connections....it's all the same and it works. I got my current job - grain hauling - by beating the bushes and telling everyone I could that I was fresh out of driving school and looking for work.

Now that I've been driving a few weeks, a couple friends are trying to get me into a freight company. So just keep at it and keep passin' the word. And you'll find a job. As the old saying goes, " The man that can't find a job - doesn't really want one."

Try searching the internet job search sites for driving jobs in Rhode Island. Just type in truck driver and your city and state. The only thing working against you right now is your age, that won't last forever. As others have posted, you may have to take other driving jobs for the short term.

thanks everyone for the help. I will be 20 by the time i get out of this school. They did warn me that it would be hard to find a job at this age, but my father owns construction company so i work for him for a good pay, so i am looking for strictly experience with a cdl so that when i am 21 i can get a little bit of a better pay and just drive. You guys were a lot of help and i am gonna call all of sand and stone type places ( there are alt around here lol ) i am just very anxious to drive the big rigs but i decided to go to school early knowing all of this that way when im 21 i can just jump right in to the trade.

    I am thinking Cement Mixer.
They do all delivery's within a 30 mile radius of the plant.
The problem is that it will be the wrong time of year, since most of the company's lay off 80% of the drivers for the winter, at least they do in NY.
Or sand and gravel can work.
Also check with the county's and state. You may get one of the great positions they have. They can have you plow roads and haul salt in winter, and normally they will cross train.
Also they almost alway pay union scale. So the pay and benefits are very good. Much better than any you will find OTR.
