I do my straps the same way, if theres enough excess. Thought it was illegal to throw the hook end... Not a good idea either way. If you hit someone with it, youre in deep ......
I'm a flatbedder!

I aalways yell, "WATCH OUT!" 3 seconds before tossing, and I give other flatbeds their space and stay clear of the landing zone best I can.

I was at a gp when a guy started throwing buckles over his plywood. The forklift driver went ape #####.
I know some people do it, I'm just not comfortable with it. Id rather throw the roll, that way there's a less chance of the strap twisting over the load and not hitting anyone in the head! Lol

I never throw the roll. Just a personal thing, though some shippers have explicit rules on not throwing the buckle.

Heard of a guy who threw the hook and ended buying a window... Only reason Id throw the hook is extremely bad wind. Other than that, its not worth the risk.
DrtyDiesel Thanks this. -
Just passed a flatbed parked in the breakdown lane hauling a load of 5gal pails. Do I need to say more.
Front 6 pallets shifted forward. Nothing hit the road, but the trailer deck looked like a tornado hit it. Driver was on the deck stacking pails. lol -
I always throw the roll. Not worth the risk of hitting someone or something with the hook.

Same ORD, only in bad winds, or your alone.
-
Throw the roll. Why throw the heavy end, especially if the strap is wet or frozen.
-
Wet straps... oh HELL no, don't bring those up! Everytime I have a good week, it rains on my final load before I can go home and the straps become hell to handle.
