Varies by dealer. If you're worth your salt you take floor ups at first and transition to referrals and repeat business. And you work the phones. You're three times more likely to close someone who came looking for you as you are a floor up. I never hung out on the floor much. Other salespeople didn't like me much because I didn't play around with them. I came to work to work, not to pitch quarters and gripe about management. That's why I eventually got promoted into management and only a couple of those people who called me an ####### lasted in the business.
I have no doubt I could do it again but for reasons mentioned before I can't do anything about it right now. Also, it's a helluva lot of work.
I'm baaaaaack!!!!!!!!

I too have toiled in the friendly arena of car and rv sales. Heckuva lotta fun on the one hand and inordinately Charlie Foxtrot on the other. Loved the no cap aspect of sales. Loved the competition aspect of it. Hated the politics, the back end crap, and 'system' selling. And with the internet I really don't think one can make a good living being a good car salesman anymore. And like the zoom master said, it's a HECK of a lotta work.
4mer trucker Thanks this. -
The adventure continues, and the fun never ends.

A company called Carvana is hurting the used car business,I bought a slightly used 2015 Chevy Impala from them in December, Best car buying experience ever, everything is done online including financing, then 2 days later they pull up to your house with a rollback drop it off,you test drive it,and have 7 days to decide if you want the car,or in big cities they have a car vending machine that you enter a code your car is sitting in a garage stall and you drive off woth it,there are no salesman,Sales Managers, and backroom financing shenanigans, this company is growing like crazy......thought about going to work for them, their delivery people/ambassadors make 22.00 an hour.
Bumper, Dark_Majesty_06 and Pintlehook Thank this. -
Do you have the ability to negotiate price online? Sounds like a cool experience, but I obviously wouldn't want to put anyone out of a job.
-
You really don't have to,mine came in 4200.00 less than any dealership within 100 miles of Nashville.Pintlehook Thanks this.

Their site looks interesting. But I live too far away. But it will give me a reasonable idea of the street value of a car I am interested in. Thanks for their info.

NEW NEWSWORTHY NEWS:
Got a call from somebody at Corporate today. Apparently somehow they got wind about my impending career relocation. The guy (don't know who he was) asked me why I was leaving.
I told him. In great detail. I named names. I gave dates. I quoted the Qualcomm. I gave him even more detail than I've given you all.
He was silent for a few moments. Then he asked if it would be all right if somebody called me back. I said I didn't really care but it would be no skin off my teeth to listen, thanks for calling, have a great day.
Got a call later.
I'll skip details and shorten this. They've offered me a closed loop, Indy to Milwaukee, better pay, with the option to go back OTR if I don't like it, under a different dispatch team. Among other things.
I'm thinking it over.4mer trucker and Bumper Thank this. -
