Meh. Not a fan of the Fiero model. Bad attempt to replicate a Ferarri, in my opinion. And certainly Pontiac had no reason to try to copy Ferarri, not with the Trans Am, Grand Prix, and Bonnieville in their lineup.

Coming from a current owner of a 2004 grand Prix GTP and a 1999 Firebird (3.8L V-6, not the bigger V-8, but still a heckuvalot of fun to drive)

Ok so I'm the douche; trip cancellation was sent to my truck by mistake, a fact that wouldn't have escaped me had I read the trip number. Shut down in Corbin KY, well short of my planned stop but also short of all the snow in Lexington. I had some ice and high winds to go with the fog and pouring rain which is why I'm shut down. Load will be late but it's roll stock, not live organs. Anyhow the ice blows my trip plan out of the water. Again.

Heavy sigh. The universe doesn't want me to work.

Well, to each his own, which is why there are so many makes out there. Certainly the GTP was one of the finest performance front drive cars in it's day--to be sure, a good example is still a blast to drive today.

BTW the Fiero was never intended to be a Ferrari copy; quite the opposite. It was originally pitched as a stylish personal transport that was extremely safe and economical to buy and own (hence the Iron Duke 2.5 liter 4 cylinder and the all-enclosing steel cage construction). It was a revolutionary idea destroyed by abysmal execution, caused by allowing the accountants spec the car out for manufacture. It wasn't until the second year of production that the GT (2.8L V6) was introduced, albeit hamstrung by the demonically handling rear suspension design and doughy steering Chevette front end. It wasn't until the 1988 model that Pontiac summarily executed the bean counters who had hijacked the Fiero and began churning them out with the original suspension design (not, as popularly believed, farmed out to Lotus but designed in house and intended for the 1984 model). The result was transcendent--a sports car with the balance and agility befitting a mid engined layout, most specifically NOT a Ferrari knockoff but distinctly American, with all the rock and roll attitude that entails. This was especially true of the now highly collectible Formula, basically a lightweight 1988 GT without all the extra body panels and options (read: extra weight) but with all the go-fast feel-good pieces intact.

GM never intended to go after or imitate Ferrari with the Fiero. That was the Corvette's job, one which the plastic fantastic performed beautifully. The Fiero was supposed to be a viable alternative to things like the Bertone X-1/9, the MR2, the 944, the RX-7, the Lotus Esprit, and other more elemental sports cars. It was well on it's way at last to being a valid option for those buyers, but in true GM fashion, as soon as they started getting the model right, they stopped making it. There was a policy that stopped production on any model whose sales dipped below 30,000 units for the year. Except for Corvette, Reatta, Allante, and Grand National.

Oops, you got me lecturing on cars. Sorry about that.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he wonders where the free food went.
