I went to job fair, and a Recruiter said, "We only hire from a list of approved schools," and he was way over the top with pushing Sage! Why??
I'm Curious, Why Would a Recruiter PUSH Sage School??

Lotta companies own stake in these mills (the Roadmaster/Werner connection for example) and if it were my guess I'd say the recruiter has commission involved

This is what I think too.

I'm not familiar with sage, and I'm not running down any school. I think any 'private' school is better than 'company sponsored training'. I went to Roadmaster many moons ago, after all.
However, there are many different ways to enter this industry. -
Could it be that a recruiter pushes a certain program based on the quality of the student drivers who have graduated from the program (i.e., reputation)?

It could be that, yes, but I am looking at Harrisburg area community college and sage school. In my opinion, I would say Harrisburg area community college would be superlative because it is a 240 hour program with 200 hours hands-on and pre inspection behind the wheel driving on the road driving and hazardous conditions driving and driving in a tanker, etc. I am really inclined to say that there is some kind of monetary kickback to the school and trucking companies hiring people out of that specific school. I have read that in the forums. Recruiters do make commission on getting drivers.

some recruiters get a bonus from the school, as many times the schools nearly promise jobs to grads.

He probably gets a kickback for referrals.

A community college run trucking program is the better way to become a driver 9 times out of 10. And no, I didn't attend a school. I have no skin in the game

I’ve looked closely at Sage before and never saw any financial connection to any carrier. What they do offer is a solid program that includes at least 44 hours behind the wheel, one on one with a trainer. I’ve talked to a few recruiters and when I mentioned that I was considering Sage, I could tell that got their attention and I’m certain it was because they provide great training, and not a kickback.
Most of the CC’s seem to offer great programs, but I also have to wonder if it’s not overkill. As most veteran drivers here will point out, CDL schools may give you some knowledge, but most of what you will learn in your first few months will come from actually driving for an (almost) living. I see nothing wrong with getting the 160 hour course and then finding a job driving.
There is another CDL school close to you called ‘Shelly Truck Driving School’ and it is located in York, PA. I recall reading several positive reviews about the school, but definitely do your own research. http://www.shellytruckdrivingschool.com/Last edited: Feb 26, 2016
