This reinforces my opinion on what I think should be done about driver trainers. First for someone to think this job is easy and is not a trade should find work elsewhere. I've been driving trucks since 1978 and there's more for me to learn. If it were that easy then the driver with a whole 7 months experience SOLO could find work anywhere. Well he can't. I ended up retiring from gasoline tankers and I can tell you that 100% of the tankers drivers that I worked with everyday had years of SOLO experience before they got hired. We could also spot a new driver most of the time.
I believe that there should be another endorsement on the CDL for driver trainer. They should have a minimum of 5 years documented driving and tested extensively. The companies should be inspected for a safe driver training program and fined heavily for violations.
I can and have trained some drivers but don't care to do it. I think driver trainers should be paid more and not just for training time. If they're required to know how to train safely then they should be paid for it.
I also know I have seen a difference in drivers since all the companies require schools to teach the drivers. Most all the schools teach is how to get a CDL. The companies that are not worth working for take these new drivers and turn them loose with no further reasonable training. There are no old timers to teach what they have learned from years of driving. Those drivers have moved on to the high paying jobs and won't work for a company that has a high turnover rate. There are alot of good big companies out there but they do not need to recruit like the cheap outfits. And they can afford to be selective.
Maybe if the government did get involved in the training we might see these drivers that think they can train all there is to know after 7 months back in the seat not training and learning more about PROFESSIONAL DRIVING.
Ima be a trainer ya'll!
