Being 43 I have to agree about so many people thinking that things are owed to them. I personally dont believe that is the way things should work tho. Nobody owes me anything for nothing. With that said I have been applying to companies that I can get my CDL through. Things are tough in this economy and I have worked in a factory since 1993...That was a good paying job.....something I planned on retiring from. That company downsized starting in 2009. I havent had a good paying job since 2010, been unemployed around three times in the last few years, and have never thought anyone owed me anything. Its easy to find a full time job that pays 10 or less an hour but that isnt getting it lol. So yes I do plan on driving to earn my living... There are good people out there yet I believe.

Really? Outlaw1 brought "race" into the equation, by the statement "even a Puerto Rican"! If he had left it open to different nationalities, i.e. "white, black, Puerto Rican", it takes any bias out of the discussion. Race should not be included at all, especially implanting the word "even"...that in itself shows a distinct bias to Puerto Ricans.
You are now bringing "gender" into this issue, which wasn't, in any way mentioned in his tirade. And with gender you combine it with "race and gender". In your statement above, you phrase it as I mentioned before, you didn't make a direct point of one v another v both, you leave it open to people in general.
I agree, I got fed up with what was coming into this industry and expecting everything handed to them. But at the same time, I did not expect any of my students to be put into a dictatorial environment. Every individual learns in a different way, at a different speed, and sometimes I can give instruction, see they don't understand, say it another way, still no comprehension. Say it many different ways, suddenly a different person comes up, says the exact thing I said (at some point) and the light goes on with that student. Maybe it was a slight little change in inflection, maybe the tone...but the instruction was finally understood. My race or gender did not have anything to do with the lesson, it just took a little more effort to get the point across.
What "race" are you aiming this at? White, black, Hispanic, Asian? Which "gender", male or female? Your "boxer short hanging out" example I have seen from all I mentioned here....what's your point?
Yes, with today's "definition" of "racist", by using one single race into your example, (Bill Cosby is black....excuse me African-American) you have put a bias into your statement.
Don't we all! I don't know, but....doesn't "elder" inflect "old or older"? I think you are trying to say, in this case, "more experienced" not necessarily meaning any age difference between student and teacher....right?
He is only correct to the point that he is the person on the truck (his ship) with the experience and training to be teaching or instructing this entry level part of this industry.
Did he? Or, did he teach bias toward Puerto Ricans...that is a possibility!! Make "real men" out of the new hires? It isn't his job to change their personality, the demeanor toward others. His job is to teach the aspects of operating that truck safely and responsibly. His job to make sure the new hire understands the method and procedures his company requires for their business, and for their employees and/or contractors to be successful.
I agree, however, it isn't my job, your job, or his job, to deal with this attitude (or lack thereof) to anyone outside of our immediate family...those we are responsible for. In this case, as I have said before, We as trainers, Mentors, Instructors, are here to teach the attributes the company expects each and every employee, male or female, black, white, or whatever skin tone.
Congratulations on doing in your family what was traditionally right! But this is YOUR FAMILY, not your student on a truck learning a new and different business....nay, more than business...a different lifestyle! -
Good grief, otherhalftw, over-analyzing everyone's opinion must be very time consuming.
I'm heading outdoors now to have a great day. I hope everyone else on this site enjoys their day too.

It started back in 2009 and slowly got worse. I started instucting back then with Prime and began with some outstanding students, then it slowly began to change as you described.... A list of problems, similiar to yours. Attitude problems, Diabetic who loved his donuts, Texting while driving, OCD and on medication. Hang around the Mill building long and you will hear the horror stories. I thought I had the worst students at prime, after listening to others I quess I got lucky, no accidents with any of my students, and out of about 20 some students only had to kick out one...... Here is a tip. Don't try to change them, they didn't get that way in one day.......

Let's see. If someone orders food at a truck stop, and once the food is delivered to the table, he shoves the food off into the floor because, "the food is touching each other on the plate," is that not a classic symptom of OCD? 2 hour showers? The list is endless!
What would you call it when someone calls another, verbally abuses the person on the other ened of the phone for 1/2 hour, hangs up, calls the same bperson back within minutes, tells her, "God is good. God loves you. I love you. God blessed you the day he put me into your life." Within a 24 hour period, I watched one student exhibit 4 personalities. Dr, Jekyl, Mr. Hyde, The prophet, and Queen Latifah.
The puerto rican statement wasn't racial at all. We had a blast. His biggest problem was the language barrier. We call each other often.
One student wrecked the trailer while I was sleeping, called safety 40 hrs later, and attempted to put the incident on me, telling them that I was driving on his hours. Accident report states the truth.
I have rules on my truck.
#1 rule is no cell phone whatsoever when your driving. This is not open for discussion. You must keep it in the sleeper and it must be turned off.
#2 rule is if you have to rethink anything related to driving that truck, and I'm asleep, wake me up immediately. I would rather get up and assist you, than you get jammed up, get into an accident or incident, etc.
There are other rules as well, nothing invasive to one's ethnicity, personal peferences, etc. They must not be thqt bad. My fleet manager has no problems with them.
Per Robert Low, president of Prime, Inc, even company drivers are "captains of the ship." They are the boss.
Wait a minute! Your beginning to sound like failure #2! -
Contrary to your opinion, I am not, nor have I ever been a racist. I have neighbors that have been friends for 25 years that are African American. We cook out, fish, mow each others yards, and even agree that Barrack Obama is a piece of ****!
Funny, the race card was a topic of choice for you to pull out. As long as people just like you can hold on to the one last ray of hope, i.e. racism will never die. Hell, I'm not racist. I'm beginning to hate everyone on an equal opportunity basis.
Anf for you.....[h=1]"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."[/h]duhduh Thanks this. -
Very interesting change in attitude....since few agreed with your "style" as stated in your first tirade!
As to what you have in bold font.....check the mirror! My "history" with teaching, both in trucking and with a local fire department speak for themselves, and also my "history" here on TTR again, proves my philosophy and ability and background. but it's your ship Captain...your rules, your own personal stress factors to deal with. -
What you don't understand is just because a person Black, doesn't mean they like Black people. Stop being ignorant. Some Blacks have self-hate directly rooted from the hate generated from White people. Never pull the race card without knowing what you're talking about.

Were you at the Drivers counter at the buffet at the Iowa 80 on the 6th? I recall overhearing a similar story from a guy wearing a prime shirt.
