My first trainee. He got hired by the company I was working for at the time but didn't have enough experience to go out on his own, as he had only 5 months. They assigned him to me.
We had our discussions about various things related to the truck and how I would evaluate him was one of those areas.
We had gotten into the second week and were going through a work zone area. Law enforcement officers had NO questions about pulling over anybody. That also included the big rigs. The speed limits decreased from 65 to 55 to 55 work zone and the associated fines. He never backed down off his speed. I told him to slow down very politely the first time. He didn't listen. I reminded him again that he needed to back down immediately because law enforcement was in the area and I had seen them! He told me that he was told in school to do the speed limit or the flow of the traffic. I reminded him that if he got a ticket during training, he would not be hired. He wasn't going to listen to me and I was NOT happy. He was instructed to take it to the next rest area and pull it over; we were swapping seats!
I got us to our company terminal up the road were he was dropped off and I got a new assignment to get another load to go pick up. I asked if he wanted to ride; he declined. I made the pick up, came back and parked it for the night.
The next morning, we headed for the main company headquarters but with me driving. We never spoke during that trip over. From the time we swapped, 24 hours later he and his stuff were out of my truck. I was assured by a couple of other trainers that I had made the right decision.
But the company was stupid enough to hire him anyway. The next time I saw him, he told me that he had only gotten 300 miles for the week.
I share all that to say this. That trainer's truck is HIS truck. What he says is the law if you want to finish. View this as your time to learn valuable driving skills and what you need to be successful!
By the same token, your trainer should have a good idea of what needs to be done with training you and how to do it best...without being impatient, rude or condescending!
