They record audio. I was called into safety because I didn't have my hands on the steering wheel when I stopped really hard and, but I had my phone plugged into my radio and my wife was talking to me (we have a no phone policy) and they thought I was just listen to a talk show
-
Hmm... do they have like, night vision capabilities or something like that?
-
And do these typically record only when an incident occurs like deceleration events and breaking too hard, or is it like, they can just eavesdrop on you anytime they feel like it?
-
They are recording all the time because, as many have pointed out, when an incident occurres it goes back 15 seconds. I'm sure it's continuously being overwritten but yes, someone could watch you at any time.

It's like team driving with a nosey neighbor.

No night vision, but it is HD and the glow from your gauges lights you up just fine. Yes, it only records during an impact event to the gyro in the camera ie hard breaking or side to side (roll over event). It will then save the last 8 secs and the next 8 secs after the event. These are sent to a third party that throws out ones the company doesn't want then the rest are sent to your company. They say they can't just at eavesdrop when the want and I believe them, since it only syncs and downloads once per day. I think it would be horrible expensive and useless for a company to log into them when they want

They can eavesdrop at any time. The former tech types on this forum that now drive say you can be snooped on at any time. There's a couple of threads about it.
One company I drove for didn't have cameras or listening devices, but did have satellite tracking. The terminal manager was always nosing around tracking us. If we stopped for a 10 hr. break before we drove 11 hours, he would call and gripe that we should finish the 11 driving. I told him, what difference does it make as long as we are on time for the appointment? He still griped. Once I stopped at a truckstop in Texas to use the restroom and fill my coffee mug. He called and griped about that and said I should have pushed on through to Dallas before stopping because that's what other drivers do on that run. The run was to Phoenix, AZ from Tennessee.
My point is, those with cameras and listening devices in the trucks; it will only get worse as the office types try to run your life minute by minute. They have the power to make your life miserable and you have the power to clean out the truck and turn it in on your way to a new job. -
We have these cameras in the new trucks we've been getting and personally when I find myself in one the driver cam mysteriously gets paperwork set in front of it. I have no qualms about the road facing cameras but the driver facing cameras are retarded. If the accident was caused by the phone or something of that nature records are easily pulled. If it was distracted driving or falling asleep the road cam will peg you. Now if they were listening in I would have heard about it already so that's out.
Just my .02kutscher007 Thanks this. -
where are these cameras anyways? are they usually in the same place in the truck? like, is it easy to obstruct them?
