Seems like this will all be a moot issue since the speed limiter mandate has been submitted for review and comment.

I hardly ever would even go 75 in my truck, so I just went ahead, in anticipation that it will become mandatory anyway, and set the limiter to 65. But I also set the ECM internal parameters so that it would run 10-15 mph over the limiter. If anyone plugs in, the truck shows limiter set at 65. But I can still run well above that any time I choose. No switches, no Bully Dog, nothing. All provide by the OEM at no extra cost and available to every owner.

The ECM settings to do this are "Driver Reward" for Cat and Cummins. Detroit calls it Fuel Economy Incentive (FEI). Most people just set the threshold low so it works all the time.

You can also allow enable PasSmart if you want the truck limited to a certain speed most of the time, but allow a driver some extra MPH to pass or before a hill. With pass smart, you pump the throttle twice to enable it.

We shouldn't be talking about this in an open forum IMO.

You still need to have the software that allows you to change the parameters. No software then you need to rely on the dealership or someone that has the software and they may not be willing to do it.

The tech at my local dealership says enjoy it while it lasts because when your ECM goes for a crap and we have to order a new one from Cummins it will not have this feature.

Canadians have been dealing with this for almost 10 yrs now. My advice is to read up on some of the legal challenges that have been brought forth by trucking companies.

I have been doing the driver reward thing, but all the Cummins and non Cummins techs say it can't be done on our 2012 ISX. They said whatever the top reward speed is set....that's what will show when plugged into.

We just need to get rid of the ATA,then we wouldn't have this problem.

They're pushing for the ECM to be locked down.

On all the EPA10 engines, the Top Speed that you have set is it. Even with the fuel incentive, etc the vehicle will not go over the TOP Speed.

We just had a 2 week training program that we all took turns going to for this very issue. All the major fleets taht we do work for are already cutting their trucks back. Every single one that comes in we are to check the top speeds and set them to 65. Some are as low as 59 or 62! I can see it being ok for the hourly guys running doubles on the turnpike because their limit is 55 here in Florida and they do deliveries in town. How do the highway guys pulling one 53' do it everywhere else when getting paid by the mile?

I am so glad I parked my truck in 2010 and never turned back! Wrench working and now Engineering training are looking brighter and brighter!

I try keep my speed at 60-62 anyway so it's not the speed that bothers me. What gets me is the undeniable safety hazard that results from several trucks getting stacked up behind one another with no stopping distance between them.

Driver A passes driver B and it takes a while so there is an inevitable line of cars behind driver A in the hammer. Driver A cuts off Driver B so as to get out of the hammer. Driver B slows to 59 mph to increase following distance or let driver A get ouy of the hammer. Driver C now runs up on the DOT bumper of driver B and the cycle begins again. Soon Driver B says hell with it and doesn't slow down anymore. Some while later there is a three Truck collision and s driver is dead from rear ending a truck.

You're right Rank. Fuel is money. But my issue is I'm always grossing 140,000 pounds and it's all hills here. You get stuck behind these fleet guys doing 50 to 55 MPH, then there I am, droping gears before the hill even starts and foot to the floor all the way up in low range.
Then you finally get to a passing lane and all of a sudden they can go 65. Passing lane ends, brake lights come on. All it does is make me road raged.

I agree with you 100% Star. We all need the ability to travel at different speeds at different times. I never thought it would affect me until I drive for two weeks with the limiter at 65. Its a dangerous situation. I don't have the numbers to back it up of course, but I am certain that accidents involving multiple trucks have increased and driver fatalities have increased. But drivers don't matter. Only votes matter.
