    Correct.

Find a better job and negotiate a better wage.

Piece work almost always pays cheaper. Most CPM jobs pay less than minimum wage. Piece work allows management to shift economic externalities (look it up) on to the employee, reducing effective and real wage. If piece work was so great you would expect management to be on a piece work pay scale. They get salary; so no matter how bad they screw up or screw the worker they get paid.

I agree the pay is to low also.

To be clear, I didn't complain about the pay being too low. I'm doing very well.

I said that the nature if the CPM model gives incentive s to do things that make everyone less safe.

Personally, I probably do better under a cpm model because I'm willing to push myself harder with less time off than most folks.

But from a safety/regulatory POV, I'd say that eliminating piecework pay would probably do a lot more to promote safety than the hos rules do. And since the only reason to fudge on hos is that piecework makes it pay to do so... Well, seems pretty obvious to me where the root of the problem lies.

And I'm not proposing anything specific. I'm just reporting on a problem area. Eliminating piecework might have unintended consequences that are much worse than the status quo.

Thank you for all of your opinions, friends. I am starting to see an underlying disincentive in the structure of the industry for drivers to follow all of the rules (and get compensated accordingly). I also was doing some research and found a lot of talk about the ELD mandate coming out. Do you guys think that this might help this?

Right, I did say it was to low. In most cases it is. It is just simple math that proves that most CPM workers for less than minimum wage. I have went through it in other posts. Just not interested to do it now.

Very much agreed. Could not say it enough times

The ELD is a whole another issue. If you want to hear a load of crap start a post about that. Some of what will be said is true some not. Some will be just a repeat of claims made by the industry lobbying groups. What is true is the ELD is cheated all the time and that cheating cannot be prevented. It is incentivized to be cheated by the CPM pay structure.

No the CPM model does NOT incentivize cheating, the person own greed does that. I have never felt the need or the desire to cheat the HOS system, even the parts I disagree with. It is the regulations we deal with, and we KNOW that going in. I agreed to work for so many CPM, within the regulations.

Rental trucks. Some of those people are not used to the large sail area of the vehicle and get blown into your lane on a gusty wind kinda day.

That's one of the problems, but the reward? Double Freedom!
