50k/year in 1994 dollars is equivalent to 79k in 2014...I wish it was still that good for new drivers!

No I'm glad to have made the switch but I did like hauling tanker. The reason I started with that was because I knew zilch about trucking and figured the driver had to unload all the freight and my body type (tall and thin) wasn't made for that kind of work. After 7 months of dry van with JB in 1997 I moved to reefer where I am now. In many ways it's a much easier job than hauling tanker was. There are very few times when somebody else unloads your cargo from a tanker. It did happen a few times when I was at Schneider, but only a few. Now I almost never have to do anything more than back into a dock and occasionally pay a lumper with a company Comchek. It's also nice not having to deal with the trailer surge. Sometimes I get a mild reminder of what that's like when hauling drums or totes. Sure you get used to it, but it's better to just not have it.

What I most liked about Schneider Bulk were things like paid layover and motel if you got to the delivery point at least 20 hours before your appointment time, plenty of miles, interesting pickup and delivery locations, good bunch of drivers there, and getting to see so much of the country that I'd never been to before (most everything east of the Mississippi). I was based out of Houston at an old dirt yard they had on I-10 just west of Channelview.

Same here, I did it for 6 months as an O/O. The most miserable time on the road.
