I cannot read all of that tag however I do not thank Cummins ever made engines in Missouri. Therefore I would assume that was a rebuild, rerate, by a Cummins shop. What does the fuel pump tag say?
I have an M11 with a conflicting tag kind of like that.

Well, that engine is about 60 miles from me and I/we didn’t look at the pump tag. I think the engine tag says, “rebuilt”.

Diesel Dave and BoxCarKidd Thank this.

I’d imagine that engine has been rebuilt by a Cummins dealer, the original tag missing as many are and they looked the cpl # up by the serial number. Probably rebuilt it to a 400 and mistakenly put the original cpl number on it.

I have a BC4 here for parts that Cummins doesn’t even have a listing for the cpl number when I give them the serial number….

As mentioned earlier, get the tag info from the pump and find out what it is calibrated for.

Even then you will only know what it was as it left the shop. Never know what may have been done along the way as time passes. I have 2 pumps on the shelf for 2 totally different engines, 1 is for Cpl 625 according to the tag. But, the tag doesn’t tell you it’s Cpl 625 +100%…..

Called a guy I know who works at Cummins, with engine serial number. Evidently, and you can see it on the tag yourself, the CPL is stamped, “363”. That is wrong, according to the engine #. Correct cpl is 393. So, ole baw, with the numerical stamps was 180* off when holding the stamp.

    Feedman Thanks this.

The engine number should be stamped into the left side of the block just below the head gasket surface at the front or rear. If they miss stamped the CPL they could have the engine number wrong too.
The early big cam 1 engines had a 3/4" deck the later ones had a 1" deck and used a 1" longer head bolt. A 3/4" deck engine is not a good candidate for a rebuild. Is there any sign of coolant leakage between the heads?
Contact Cummins with the engine number and see which head bolt it uses.

Once this engine is in my hands, I’ll do a thread on the tear down and build.

So, early BC1’s had the same deck as a small cam?
