ive been using a garmin for years, in my truck and my four wheeler...

ALWAYS check the route it sends you!!! They can put you in tight places if you let them. Mine has a feature that I can set Via points and the GPS reroutes to them to avoid places i know i cant go.

Best feature is its great at telling you when you will arrive so I can set my eta/pta to get another load....also good for telling me how many miles the Rand McNally system screwed me out of today...

Exactly. However, I can't find 340 at stores and I'll need to buy this until tomorrow. I found TomTom, Garmin 200, 260, 350 and above, but then it becomes too expensive for me. So, I'm between 260 and 350. I really don't need the MP3s and pictures, blah, blah, blah that comes with 350 but if it has a better performance finding addresses quickly and not locking, etc, I will get it.

    350...

when your on the map screen...simply press the center of the screen and a map will show that you can zoom in and put and get a view of your entire route.

For example, when i know im going though Atlanta, I have saved preset "via points" on my GPS so that it will route me on I285 instead of though the city like it wants to go.

Just came from the store. I got Garmin nuvi 350. The salespeople told me I should buy their service plan, just in case the thing melts or needs some repair, I can take it to the store and they replace it right away. What do you guys think? Is that service plan really necessary/ important?

I did on my second one. The 1st one had problems. This way I get it replaced if something happens to it.

I have been using a Garmin Nuvi 660 for over a year now. Yes, it does have a few features that I don't use, but I might. There are a couple of newer models out or will be shortly that address some of the shortcomings of the 660. I may have to break down and buy one. I have never used some of the models some of you are talking about so I don't know what features they have. Mine has a wide range and the users manual didn't tell me about all of them. Just play with it and touch every part of the screen and you will find them all. My biggest complaint is having only one waypoint. They newer models will accept up to 10. That will be very useful.

Almost any GPS unit you buy will NOT help the trucker avoid HAZ-MAT or low-bridge routes. My Garmin nuvi 680 tried to direct me under a 12' 10" bridge in Aurora, IL the very first trip out.

NOTHING beats a sharp set of eyes for warning signs, and reading the trucker's atlas when you set your route up during pre-planning.

Best of luck and welcome back.
