Not sure I can help with out a picture but I will try.

First off. If your neg cable has power , it's not a negative cable.

Not it sure why your getting 15.5 volts. Maybe your meter is reading high. Any good 12v batt will read 12.5 volts with engine not running.

Anyway it it doesn't really matter.

Take Your big positive cables and hook them up to the big stud on the selinoid. Now take the big negative cables and hook them to the big stud at the very end of the big starter.

Your red ign wire goes to the small terminal on the little relay on the very top.

Personally i I just rip that that little relay off and hook you ign wire direct to the selinoid. Having two relays is just more issues down the road.

    Hope that helps.

so basically hook all your hot cables to the big stud on the smaller round cylinder that sits on the main starter motor.
Then hook your negative cables to the very end of the big main starter motor.

If if your not sure the cables are neg or pos , test them before hooking them up.

The big cables are all the same color on most trucks so don't think there all negative if there black.

Thanks Lowmax, Welder and Swaan for the quick comeback. OCP=over crank protectection, I don't have on my truck, but the new starter has the mounted connection for it. The instructions say that if truck doesn't have OCP there should be a plug come with the starter to ground it, but there was no plug in my new starter box. The guy that sold it said not to worry about it, but now I'm worried. My battery cables are easy to hook, the + cables are all red, the -ves are either black or white. I cleaned and greased all connections before buying new starter as I checked the old starter to find non crank problem. 15.5 volts is high, might be multimeter too high, but I had also charged batteries right up to try and get it to start. Trailer is loaded and hooked, so I'm trying to roll tomorrow AM. Just wondering if any one knows about that OCP plug and if that is the problem, but I don't see how it can be.

Ocp is just to protect from overheating the starter. I just taped mine up,to keep any moisture out.

I'm just not sure what the issue is exaclly.
Very simple. You got your pos cables hooked to the proper stud and same with your neg cables.
Then all u need is your hot wire from ign hooked up and it should work.
That ocp is built into the starter and automatically resets itself if tripped. Shouldn't be the issue here.
Have you checked to see if you got power at the red ign wire when you hit the key. ??

Thanks to you for the info, however, I got it fixed last night. The problem was one of the strangest things ever happened to me. I tested all my connections and batteries etc, and replaced the starter with the new 39mt. Multimeter showed I had a short somewhere as it showed 14.5 volts from battery -ve post to my ground cable to starter. I studied my wiring and diagrams on internet wherver I coild find them and the insturction with the started. Thought I needed theplug for the OCP, altho instructions said I didn't as did swaan above. Anywhoo, finally decided I had everything wired correctly and very timidly put ground cable on -ve post. NO PROBLEM!. Which made no sense, but others here posted that I should not have 15.5 volts on my +ve cable so guess what. The 9 volt battery in my multimeter was too weak, replaced it and all tests with it looked good, showed only 10.5 volts at power cable, put charger on, brought up to 13.5v and she cranks and starts like a new starter should. It's a wonder I have any hair left on my head. The info here helped me to realize there was something not right. Thanks a bunch.
