I am thinking of trying to start pulling someone else's loads on their trailer using my tractor and authority. Can anyone provide some useful info on this? Do I have to lease to them? what is the normal payscale for this? Any info or experience you can share would be appreciated.

If you want to pull loads under your authority with someone elses trailer, you would just carry trailer interchange insurance. Or if you are just going to be pulling one specific trailer I believe you could list that trailer on your policy and put the owner as additional insured.

As casual trucker said the transporter tags are a good idea. And make sure there IS a contract drawn up. Make sure they are paying for all trailer related maintaince expenses PERIOD! it's not your trailer inform them that you will not be paying to maintain it! Make sure if you do have to fix something that you will be reimbursed for the cost of the repair. Also ask about an escrow account. Some companies when you pull their trailer will put money into an escrow like .01/mile? Nope do not let them do that it's bogus. They do that to keep your money and "say" its in case their trailer gets damaged. Nope you don't need one that's what insurance is for and tell them that!

You have your own authority make sure they know that you control where the truck goes not them. Make sure they understand that if you're inspected and the trailer has problems they're going to reimburse you for the cost of your fines plus whatever it does to your insurance and CSA. Companies don't like maintaining trailers it's a proven fact there is a lot of junk on the road and you don't want to get stuck paying for it in the end. As long as your cargo insurance is alright, you have your liability, and trailer interchage you'll do find. Just be careful with the contracts and make sure there is a clasue in there that prevents them from holding any of your money should you decide to leave, also make sure there is a clause that says you can leave anytime you would like to.
