I am actually in the same shoes you are in. Stopped driving May 2009. I called several companies. As you said, Maverick is they only one I found that would take me without taking a $1000 refresher course. I'm not willing to call Swift so I didn't know they would take you on without the refresher. Melton and the others will want you to go through the entire CDL 160 course all over and come on as a student or get experience else were and come on after experience. And I called just about all that I could find. Except Werner and Swift. Not willing to go that route.
I called
Melton, TMC, Boyd Brothers, McElroy, Keim TS, BMT, and many others.
Seems like there are the only 2 that will take you without at least a refresher. And the only ones I found that will take you with the short 50 hour refresher course is McElroy and Schneider.

Check out McElroy Truck Lines out of Cuba, AL. They guarantee you home every weekend or they pay you extra money if they don't. Also check out PGT Trucking. Not sure if they are still doing the training deal but they were a couple years ago and they were pretty good to me. They also try to get you home on weekends but it's not guaranteed. I can't imagine your troubles since you stopped in 09. I was canned from a local tanker outfit when they lost their contract with the steel mill here and been on unemployment since March of last year. I haven't even been out of driving for 1 full year and a lot of companies are hesitant to hire me.

Swift treats you fine but expect pay wages under McDonald employees. I started out my trucking career with them but left after 4 months and paid the training off. I would seriously call McElroy and PGT if I were you and see what they can do before you just take Swift. I would rather cook fries then work for Swift again.

I will definitely call both of those tomorrow, McElroy looks very interesting to me and starting $.43 a mile? that's good compared to what I've seen elsewhere. What kind of miles did you get there? Equipment looks good too! Thank you for your help, Swift certainly wasn't my first choice, I had never heard of these two companies before. -
I haven't ever worked for McElroy I worked for PGT and averaged 2000-2500 miles a week depending on how hard I worked. Max I got was 3000 but that was with some long trips that paid a little less per mile. PGT is percentage and McElroy does start at .43/mile but keep it mind that does include your tarp pay. You won't get separate pay for tarping.

Do you prefer percentage pay over regular pay? -
Sell your car. Go buy a junk truck and junk trailer with a negative arch when loaded. Just drive it until it quits and buy another junk truck. You can get an agency to set you up in a couple of weeks, you'll be trucking.
The insurance will be high to start, but it's better than working for Swift.
No habla; no problem.
Everybody is doing it this way nowdays. -
It's hard to say when comparing to other companies since their rates they haul for are different. Generally with percentage and comparing with other people I did less work for the same money. Sometimes during the winter months I wished I was paid per mile but percentage was good for me at PGT overall.
