Hi all, I have just signed-up for this program(going to orientation today) and hopefully some of you guys/gals that have gone through this can fill me in. I called Michigan Works! for some info and they said it'll take about 4months for the whole process. I am wondering after the 4months do I have to be in school right away? I am planning on going to W/S driving school but I am figuring since it'll take almost half a year to get this done anyway I may as well go in the winter(in the meantime I will keep researching and learning more about the business) and just go to Montana when the weather is at it's worst to make a better driver. Anyone know which months Montana has it's worst winter weather?
I probably won't even be on the road until late this year or early next year...sigh...but I am willing to do whatever it takes to make me the best driver I can possibly be. I know in the end it will be well worth the effort and sacrifices I will have to make.
Can't wait to get out of Michigan for good, love the land, the people aren't really that great(probably do to the crappy economy) and jobs are dismal.
Take care & keep your jobs Michiganders it's especially rough in this state!

Hey MIblues,
Well buddy they did not inform you wrong about how long this process will take, the whole process for me took roughly 3 and half months from start to finish and that was before the unemployment rate went up in December. I started the process at the end of September and received approval on Jan 5, 2009 , and was called by the school to start 2 weeks later.
The school that your wanting to go to has to be on the list of sponsored and approved funding list, I don't know about W/S being on the list you will have to ask your case manager in reference to the approved list of schools.
Again alot of it has to do with the case manager that your assigned, should I say I had a real lazy and slow to do anything manager and it took talking with her supervisor to get things moved along quicker. Some people say that there time was a little faster but you will just have to stay on the progress.
After orientation, you will have to take TABE, Career Scope, get them done soon as possible, then get all the classes out of the way, get assigned a case manager, then they will have you complete a blue book, once you complete as this and turn it into your manager, they will submit it to the board for final approval, stay in contact and commuciate with your manager. Just don't piss them off, remember you are wanting something from them, so patience is really needed in this whole process, believe me they will test them everyday.
Hope this helps out if you need any information let me know and I will try to help in anyway I can.

I read some of the things on here, will probably read more later. Just figured I would add a positive 2 cents. I started my process in...either late June or early July, stayed on top of them on the constant. Called everyday, left a messege. Never got mad, always stayed positve, some messeges with a more urgent feel. Hell, begging if I had to. Crept my way through the steps, but always hell on wheels to do EVERYTHING I need to do to get this done. Now, Im a few days into trucking school, the state really came through. In my area, it is a battle for money, the people who fight the hardest, get the money. There are just too many people BEGGING for it that it's impossible to avoid 50 hoops. But it was worth it if you want it. They need to see the fact that you want it dripping from your fangs. Fact.
I got the help I need, they came through, YOU need to step up to make it happen. Be just barely short of standing outside of the building with a sign demanding them to let you become a success story of the program. At least thats how I see it. Happy as hell with them. Happy with the school Im at, confident that I can get where I want to be with passion and hard work. We will see. The state, however, is trying to help. They could use the income tax. Don't ##### about a group trying to do something good. Man up and make it happen. Still, no rosy glasses, be ready to be denied at every step for any reason, and continue at all costs despite it. -
Man after reading through all this, I'm almost tempted just to find a school that contracts you out on contract for a year to pay for the schooling, I'm gonna go to michigan works on monday and look into the nwlb, but man it sounds like a big pain in the ###..
