The only way I would swap in a reman instead of just inframing the one I already have is if the block is no longer usable ( or I wanted a different engine all together). My reasoning for this is I operated it. I know I didn't hurt the block and crank and even the heads. I didn't overheat it. Didn't spin the crank into unsafe stratosphere rpm. Didn't twist it in its mounts starting out in wrong gears. Didn't lug it to slow idle till it dies. Didn't run water only in it and almost have it freeze in a surprise cold snap.
In otherwords I know the absolute history of the engine and if it treated me good I will gladly refresh it and give it another chance. I do not know didly about how the reman I would get was treated and because of that It could have a ton of bad attitude gremlins come with it. Just my beliefs for what its worth.Rideandrepair and AModelCat Thank this. -
Well mine is basically overhauling the aftertreatment system, and they pulled out the ceramic plungers, installed metal in the fuel pump -
Wait for it...……..

Here’s a summary of my Little Detroit Overhaul adventure. Replaced a few extras, 20 yr old radiator, with 4 row copper/brass. I had already done the waterpump, and plan to replace oil cooler, injector harness, engine harness, and Battery cables, and starter Myself this summer. Since they’re still original. That will be another $1000-$1200, roughly.

Not a bad bill considering the amount of parts that you replaced. How long did the overhaul take and what has your break-in period been like?Swine hauler and Rideandrepair Thank this.

3 weeks, actually 4, due to lost time, chasing/ waiting on parts, being it was over the holidays. So far,at 2400 miles, it has burned about a quart of oil. I’m going to change it now, and again before 6k. Truck runs great, mpg around 6, no oil slobber or smoke, at all. Check valve had gone bad, while sitting,I replaced it. Had a problem with it sputtering out,on first trip, changed fuel filters. Fixed the problem. Still sucking air a little, has sputtered very slightly, twice, since, after idling a bit. I suspect the shutoff valves on tanks, or a bad fuel line to the pump. Had the problem before the OH, had dosed it will killem, also. May have been why filters plugged up.Mechanic wanted to put new fuel filters on, but I told him not to, since they were almost new, that I’d change them at 5 k, when I changed oil. I have decided to change oil now, then again, before 6k, for good luck. The engine had some sludge, something it’s never had before. It was due to Me using a lot of Lucas, over last 2 yrs. But He cleaned everything up real good. Took time to run a magnet around inside, after cutting the block. I hung around a bit and degreased and painted some stuff, watched them cut counterbores, do bull gear, and helped set the head on. Minor stuff, like new bolts on accessories that I normally change myself, were done. I tried not to be a nuisance, and He really worked with Me, to get all the little things, the way I wanted.TallJoe, kemosabi49 and Swine hauler Thank this.
